Tom Russell 1928-2006

It is with regret that Stanstead College learned this week of the death of former Headmaster Tom Russell on Tuesday, September 26, 2006, at home surrounded by his family at the age of 77.
Mr. Russell was born in the coastal village of Beer, Devon, England on December 28, 1928. A graduate of the University of London, he came to Stanstead in 1968 as an English teacher. He was Assistant Headmaster when Headmaster Raymond Lester was tragically killed in an automobile accident in late 1971. Mr. Russell was appointed to the position and remained at Stanstead until 1976, when he became Headmaster of Balmoral Hall in Winnipeg, a position he held for 10 years.
He and his wife Janet retired to Vancouver Island to be close to the sea again.
Joan McDonald in her book The Stanstead College Story wrote that Mr. Russell’s “ability to comfort and cheer up a lonesome new boy or a down-trodden student was an asset appreciated by the many boys, and many youngsters going through a period of homesickness found themselves having a meal with the Russells and feeling part of a family again.”
He is the father of Mary Ann and Kevin (Sheryll) and proud grandfather to Adam, Kyle, Donavon, Amy and Kurt. His last words to them all were “be happy.” He also leaves behind his sister Ruby and many other family members and friends in England and around the world.
Mr. Russell’s wish was to be remembered as he was before his illness progressed. Honouring his request, there will be no service. With his quick wit, smile, and gentle manner, he was loved and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family thanks all the hospice and home care people who helped ease the pain and provided support during Tom’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Victoria Hospice, 1510 Fort St., Victoria, B.C. V8S 5J2, or online at
www.victoriahospice.org.
Stanstead alumni, staff and friends can send their condolences and memories to
