1948

Doug Grant started working in Montreal shortly after leaving Stanstead in 1948. He writes, “As soon as paycheques consistently arrived, I bought my first set of drums, 1948 White Marine Pearl Slingerland Radio Kings. Here I am 56 years later playing the same drums in the house band at the Vernon Jazz Club in B.C.” Doug plans to visit Stanstead in September 2005 (Homecoming) and says, “Hope to see you there.”

Charmian (Finch) Brooks and classmate Rhodope Milner-White were reunited (see below) in 2003 after not having seen one another in over 50 years. Rhodope was sent over to Stanstead when her parents feared the Germans were about to invade England and has led a wonderfully interesting life since Stanstead, graduating fromCambridge University and spending many years with her husband in Nigeria.

Charles Hodgson did a lot of skiing this winter. He committed himself to cross-country ski every day for 100 days in a row in an effort to raise money to help Amnesty International’s campaign against torture. His worst day was in early December when a warm spell briefly melted all the snow and he was reduced to plodding around on Zamboni droppings out behind an Ottawa arena. Many 20 kilometre days made up for this, though, and he has captured the experiences in a daily log on his website: www.100days4joy.com.

It's a challenge that I wouldn't give up for anything; afraid of heights but need to rock climb to get at these birds!!! The landscape, fragile and seemingly pristine, is stunning and the wildlife wild and awe-inspiring. I have had many encounters with polar bears – some wonderful, some very scary”.
