Janet Cass `58
For many Stanstead
College alumni, Janet Cass was the smiling face of the Business Office. For
close to 30 years her sunny disposition made students feel welcome as they
stopped by to check for mail or ask about their accounts. In return, Janet says,
the students kept her young.
“The students, the
teachers and staff, that’s what kept me there for as long as I was,” said Janet,
who retired at the end of the 2003-2004 school year.
Janet has Stanstead in
her blood. Born and raised here, she attended Stanstead College at a time when
it was the English school for all local children. Janet was in the last
graduating class of Bugbee Business School in 1958 and immediately began her
working career in the registrar’s office at McDonald College. She was working as
a secretary at Victoria Hospital in London, Ont. in 1975 when a part-time
position opened up in the Stanstead College Business Office under then-manager
Philip Wood.
“It was the second year
of the Howie Meeker Hockey School and they needed extra help,” she recalled. “At
the time, the school did all the work for the hockey school. After that, I was
asked to stay on.”
Over the years, there
were many changes in the office, including the introduction of computers. But
the one constant was the steady stream of students who came and went and made
the years fly by.
“I didn’t expect to stay
as long as I did,” she said, looking back at her 29 years.
Janet has no definite
plans for her retirement other than to enjoy her free time and perhaps do some
volunteer work.
