At its annual Baccalaureate Service held June 19th
at Centenary United Church in Stanstead, Stanstead College officially named its
student centre the Eric T. Webster Student Centre in honour of the longtime
trustee and benefactor of the school.
Eric Webster was an
active and devoted school trustee from 1949 to 1975, serving as chairman of the
board from 1964 to 1975, the longest term in school history. After his
retirement, he remained as honorary president until his death in October, 2003
at the age of 87.
Mr. Webster played a
critical role in the development of Stanstead College and presided over much of
its physical growth, including the construction of LeBaron Hall, the Amaron
Gymnasium, and the Ralph Hood Swimming Pool. Moreover, he was committed to
providing the best education possible for students, some of whom he personally
assisted in his quiet way.
To honor his legacy, the
current Stanstead board of trustees and administration chose a naming
opportunity befitting Mr. Webster’s fondness for students and student life.
The Eric T. Webster
Student Centre was constructed in the fall of 2001, a mere eight months after
fire destroyed the former student centre on the same site.
On hand for the unveiling
ceremony were members of Mr. Webster’s family, including his widow Jane Webster,
stepson David Armitage, and grandson Matthew Price-Gallagher, a current
Stanstead College trustee, who spoke of Mr. Webster’s humble strength and
commitment to the school.
