Scholarships & Financial Aid

NEW! The YUP Stewardship Scholarship. Click here for details.

Stanstead College is committed to enrolling a talented and diverse student body. The College is determined to provide admission opportunities to as many qualified applicants as possible. Our Financial Aid Program is designed to bridge the gap between what a family can afford and what it costs to attend Stanstead College. For the 2008-2009 academic year, 35% of the student body received scholarship funding and/or financial aid. Awards are currently available to new and returning students domiciled in Canada and the United States.

Scholarships
Boys and girls entering Grades 7 through 11 may be eligible to compete for scholarships, renewable annually.* In order to be eligible to compete for an entrance scholarship, students must first submit a completed application to the College and have an academic average of 85% (or the equivalent) in their current school. Athletic scholarships are not available at Stanstead College. Instead, families should consider applying for financial assistance, detailed below.

One full entrance scholarship may be awarded to a student entering Grade 9, 10 or 11 (Secondary III, IV or V). The scholarship is awarded on the basis of a scholarship examination and is renewable as long as the student maintains an 85% average with no grade below 65% and remains active within the College community.

A number of partial scholarships are available each year to new students, awarded on the basis of the scholarship examination, averaging 25% of tuition fees, up to a maximum of 50% of tuition fees. These are renewable according to the same criteria as the full scholarship.

The annual entrance scholarship examination, which takes place in February, includes testing in core subject areas including: English, French and Mathematics.

Financial Aid
Additional financial assistance is available to students in Grades 7 through 12 based on academic merit and financial need. In order to be eligible for financial aid, students must first submit a completed application to the College as well as a completed Financial Assistance for Canadian Students (FACS) application to Apple Financial Services in Toronto. This must be submitted and received by the College before the deadlines of March 15, April 10 or May 15 (please refer to "Procedure and Deadlines" below). The College makes every effort to meet the needs of families applying to the school however it should be noted that awards do not exceed 50% of tuition fees. The average financial aid award is 25% of tuition fees.

Financial Aid awards are based upon two criteria. The principal factor is the family’s financial situation and need for assistance as determined through a completed FACS application. The second determinant is the applicant’s assessed overall merit: his/her current or potential contribution to the Stanstead College community as determined through the completed application to the College (including references, personal or telephone interview, admissions test and academic reports, community involvement, school involvement, extra-curricular activities, etc.).

Financial Aid awards are normally offered for one academic year and are renewable annually on application provided the student has maintained a strong academic average and has remained active within the College community.

NOTE: Parents and students of families receiving financial assistance will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement on acceptance before the start of the academic year. This agreement will be strictly enforced.

Interest-Free Loans
Loans are provided to applicant families based upon their need for assistance as determined through submitted financial assistance application (FACS). Loans normally represent a portion of a financial assistance package, and are generally extended to families already receiving some other form of financial assistance. Interest-free loans tend to be relatively small. The typical value is less than $5,000.

Note: Recipient families sign a loan agreement with Stanstead College. Loans remain interest-free during the students’ period of enrollment. Interest begins to accrue July 1 following the recipient’s graduation or departure from the school.

Interest-free loans are normally offered for one academic year and are renewable annually upon application, provided the student has maintained a strong academic average and has remained active within the College community.

Special Prizes and End-of-Year Awards
These awards are available to returning students who are selected through a faculty nomination and voting process. Selection procedure of recipients varies according to the award or prize. A few are determined through committee, and two through a vote of all faculty and students. Amounts associated with these special prizes and awards range from $100 to $15,000.
