Role models, leadership, opportunity

Prefects
Each year, approximately 20 senior students are chosen to act as prefects. It’s a great honour with many privileges and considerable responsibility. Prefects act as liaisons between students and the faculty and administration and are expected to model proper behaviour and represent the school properly at all times. These students have large expectations placed upon them, and as a school we spend significant time selecting, training, managing and teaching our prefects.

Student Council
An opportunity for students to work on behalf of their peers, the student council consists of the elected house committee from all four residences along with the prefect heads-of-houses. Together, the council members address issues of concern and work with the administration to transform ideas into action.

Big Brother/Big Sister
At the start of the school year, senior students pair up with new, younger students to help make the transition to boarding school life that much easier. Whether it's to answer questions, have someone to talk to or someone to look up to, big brothers and big sisters are important role models.

Conferences
There are so many opportunities available to Stanstead College students, and not just on our own campus. Each year, select students attend conferences such as the Forum for Young Canadians, technology seminars, debating tournaments and international Round Square gatherings. They are opportunities to expand horizons and explore new possibilities.

Multicultural Week & UN Day
Students at Stanstead College come from, on average, 15 different countries, each with its own set of traditions, customs and history. Our international students have a chance to share their heritage during two special events during the year. The first is Multicultural Week, where students take over the school kitchen to prepare traditional meals from their home countries. The second is United Nations Day, when we invite local elementary school students to visit various international pavillions and learn about the many different cultures represented here. Both events are opportunities to share our international pride.

Did you know…?

“Prefect” is from the Latin “praefectus,” which means “put in charge.”
