The Senior Girls Spartans captured their home soccer invitational this past Saturday for the first time since 2000, beating Montreal's Sacred Heart 2-0 in the final. Sacred Heart had won this annual tournament for the previous four years.
The girls made it to the final by defeating BCS 8-0 and The Study 6-0.
Coach Erik Van Dyke had glowing praise for his team, who have been playing together for only just over a week.
"As Headmaster Wolfe draped the gold medals around the necks of the Spartans, it occurred to me that this may be the toughest team I’ve ever coached," he wrote in his game review. "At least half the girls played through some sort of nagging injury today, giving their all despite the pain. With this brand of toughness mixed with this much skill and smarts, we might make some noise this season. Some serious noise."
At the other end of Highway 143, the Junior Boys Spartans celebrated a banner day at the Bishop's College School Invitational Midget Tournament, last won by the Stanstead squad in 2007. The boys beat Alexander Galt 4-1 and Lower Canada College 7-2 to face host BCS in the championship final, ultimately defeating them 2-0.
"All in all, this was a positive team victory in what I thought was an incredible soccer game," wrote Coach James Rioux. "We tip our hats off to rival BCS for a super effort, as they are a well-coached and skilled team. The stage is now set for another competitive season of ETIAC league play as BCS will be traveling to Stanstead for our first of two regular season games this coming Friday."
