Stanstead College marked a truly busy and very successful athletic weekend, with the Spartans winning the BCS Senior Boys Basketball Invitational, two hockey league division titles and a junior varsity hockey tournament victory.
The Senior Spartans won the BCS tournament for the first time in the 22-year-history of the event. In a challenging round-robin format, Stanstead went 3-1 leading into the final against Westwood High, winning handily 58-38.
Fabrice Joseph was named tournament MVP for lighting up the scoreboard and for his unmatched athleticism. James Savory was named an all-star for his newfound speed and intensity.
Coach Simard has full details online.
The senior girls also travelled to Lennoxville for their invitational tournament but failed to make the finals, going 2-2 on the weekend. (Read Coach Van Dyke's rundown.)
In hockey, the Stanstead College girls went four-for-four in their third North American Prep Hockey League set of games, beating Rothesay-Netherwood 2-1, Kuper Academy 5-2, Wyoming Seminary 3-2 and Northwood 4-1. This gives them a league record of 7-3 and the division title in their rookie year heading into league playoffs February 19-21. This Wednesday, the girls play Tilton School in Tilton, NH for the first time since December when the Spartans defeated Tilton in the final of their home invitational. This coming Sunday, the Spartans host Rice Memorial from South Burlington, Vt. here at home, game time 11 a.m. The girls now have an overall record of 25-3-3.
The varsity boys travelled to Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ont. for their third Midwest Prep Hockey League weekend, going 3-1 over three days, defeating powerhouse St. Andrew’s 3-2, Ridley College 5-4 and National Sports Academy 4-0 but falling to St. Francis Prep 4-0. Like the girls, the boys have earned their division banner leading into the playoffs later this month at Gilmour Academy in Ohio. The boys now have a record of 29-10-3. (Read Coach Rioux's recap of the weekend.) The boys have a three-game home stand coming up: Vermont Academy, February 3 at 4:30 p.m., Bridgton Academy February 7 at 1 p.m. and New Hampton School February 10 at 4 p.m.
Not to be outdone, our junior varsity boys travelled to Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, MA to participate in the Annual Varsity “B” Ice Hockey Jamboree. After going 2-1 in the opening rounds, the Spartans beat Rumsey Hall 4-3 in the semi to earn a spot in the championship final against Kuper Academy, which had handed them the opening-round defeat. After falling behind 2-0 in the second, the JV Spartans battled back to win their first tournament championship 4-3.
Congratulations to all the teams for their tremendous performances.
