The provincial and federal governments have announced that the Town of Stanstead’s proposal to build a new arena will receive funding.

Federal Transport Minister John Baird and Quebec Municipal Affairs Minister Laurent Lessard announced in Quebec City Monday morning that over $700 million would be spent on infrastructure projects in Quebec. All the approved projects, including the Stanstead arena, were listed. However, no individual dollar amounts were given. A specific announcement for Stanstead is expected at a later date.

“Getting the green light on the arena project is fantastic news for the border community,” said Stanstead Mayor Philippe Dutil. “The existing arena is on its last legs and the entire community has been hoping to build a new one for some time. Without government support, this wouldn’t be possible. This funding will allow the Town of Stanstead to build a state-of-the-art athletic facility that will contribute to the pride and well-being of the community as a whole.”

The current arena, located on Riverside Street, was built in 1954 by the Border Arena Company. In 1968, ownership of the arena was transferred to Stanstead College. To this day, the College takes very seriously its commitment to operating the arena as a community facility. In fact, 70 percent of the ice time is used by community leagues and organizations.

This commitment will continue with the construction of the new arena. The proposed site for the new arena is on Stanstead College property behind the school’s gymnasium. While the Town of Stanstead will own the arena, it will be managed and operated by Stanstead College. The College will also share its fundraising expertise to help the town raise its matching one-third share of the financing for this important project.

“We’re very happy to be working in partnership with the Town of Stanstead and continuing to provide access to this new sports facility as we have for the past 40 years,” said Headmaster Michael Wolfe. “It’s a win-win situation for the Town of Stanstead and Stanstead College, and we look forward to receiving more details soon.”

As announced recently in the media, the new arena will be named The Pat Burns Arena after the legendary NHL coach.

“Pat Burns has a deep attachment to the Eastern Townships and has been a great supporter of the Town of Stanstead over the years,” said Mayor Dutil. “The whole community is honoured to have his name attached to this project.”
