Both Stanstead College Senior Spartan squads made it to the finals this past weekend but the visiting teams brought home the banners at the 38th Annual Anderson-Bailly Provincial Small Schools Basketball Tournaments.
The Anderson (Boys) Tournament was comprised of six teams: BCS, Gaspe Polyvalent, Richmond Regional, Quebec High, St. Johns High School and Stanstead College. The Bailly (Girls) Tournament was made up of four teams this year: BCS, Quebec High, Shawinigan High School and Stanstead College.
Game action began Friday morning with the Senior Girls Spartans defeating BCS 37-26. The girls secured a spot in the final by beating Quebec High 43-36 Friday evening. This set up a final round-robin game Saturday against a very strong team from Shawinigan, which had also secured a final slot. The strategy was for Stanstead to save its A game for the final, resulting in a 38-58. A-game aside, Shawinigan proved too much for Stanstead in the final match-up Sunday afternoon, defeating the Spartans 45-34.
Team captain Margarita Acero was named tournament all-star for the Spartans.
In the two-pool Anderson Tournament, the Spartans were undefeated in round-robin, going 69-43 over Gaspe and 58-21 over St. Johns. The semi-final saw the boys defeat local rival BCS 67-43. This led to a final against a dominant team of veterans from Quebec High. The end result was the fourth Anderson championship in a row for QHS, defeating the Spartans 81-45.
Fabrice Joseph was named tournament all-star for the Spartans.
