March 2008
Stanstead College offers its students countless post-secondary options. Our Grade 12 graduates especially are welcomed by top universities throughout North America. But one place where we’ve often hit a roadblock is in our own province. According to tradition, Quebec universities have required our Grade 12s to attend two years of CEGEP before they’d consider their application, the same as for students coming out of Grade 11.
For some time, we along with other Quebec independent schools with Grade 12 programs have been lobbying to change this situation. We’ve argued that there is a lapse in logic in Quebec universities’ willingness to accept Grade 12 students from other provinces but not their own. In the process, we’ve discovered that this rule is more of an unwritten one than an official one.
After many years, I’m pleased to report that logic has won out. Earlier this month, Bishop’s University in nearby Lennoxville became the first university in Quebec to officially open its doors to our Grade 12 graduates. In fact, they’ve already granted admission to a number of our 2008 grads into the university’s various four-year programs. We’re confident that other Quebec universities will follow suit.
This is good news for everyone – for Stanstead, for Bishop’s (and hopefully other Quebec universities) and for our students, who now have more post-secondary options than ever.
To take advantage of these options, of course, our students must first succeed academically here at Stanstead. And I'm especially thrilled to see that, based on our Winter Term results, this is the case. There are 37 students on the Headmaster's List this term and another 27 students on the Honours List. The Winter Term is an especially long and active one, so these students should be very proud of their achievement.
Here's looking to continued excellence in the upcoming final term.
