Maintaining Academic Standards
Study
There is a study period each evening for students at all grade levels. Students are placed in Study Hall when they receive two or more unsatisfactory effort ratings in one report. Students who maintain an A- average without any unsatisfactory effort ratings may be allowed the privilege of optional study. With these two exceptions, all students study in their own rooms or in the library.
Extra Help
Teachers are available for extra help when the request for assistance is made in advance.
Learning Assistance
“Gap” teacher assistants are assigned students who require academic support in one or more areas. These sessions are held during spares or during evening study.
Private tutoring
Selected students in the Language Arts, Science, Mathematics and French programs may benefit from individual private tutoring as requested and/or recommended by the respective department heads. Parental consent and approval by the Director of Academics is required. There is an additional cost for this service.
Learning Centre
Stanstead College is a preparatory school, and all students enrolled are capable of succeeding in an academic curriculum designed to prepare them for post-secondary education. Students who experience academic difficulty may require specific accommodations, extra support outside the classroom and assistance to reinforce academic strategies that go beyond subject-specific tutoring. Qualified teachers tailor curriculum to the needs of the individual student. The most common areas of instruction include organization, time management, note-taking, test-taking, memory and recall, writing strategies, essay planning, advanced reading comprehension, academic confidence, and critical or abstract thinking strategies. Students are taught how to use graphic organizers and other techniques designed for success. As with any other course, attendance is required and absences are handled according to the school’s regular policy on class attendance.
Any questions or concerns regarding the academic programme please contact the Director of Academics.
