This year’s student production was once again directed by Barbara Elliot and included a cast of students from Grades 9 through 12: Anna Rosa Braun, Jeffrey Cowen, Min Jee, Taek Whan "Devon" Kwon, Said Al Mahruqy, Jessika Mathurin, Stephan Meier, Christina Nash and James Petrek. Technical support was by Evan Pynes and Lucas Jansen.
“There is nothing more exciting than the magic of the final culmination of weeks of hard work,” said Mrs. Elliot. “It is a memory that will remain in the hearts and minds of the young actors involved – the magic of giving life to the written word.”
Written by Michael Frayn, Noises Off was first staged in London in 1982 and has had several successful runs on both sides of the Atlantic. A film version starring Carol Burnett and Michael Caine was released in 1992.
The play centres on a small-town theatrical company as they struggle to bring a farce entitled Nothing On to the stage. The audience gets to see both this “play” as well as the backstage shenanigans, machinations and bickering. There is much running up and down stairs, in and out of doors, misplaced props and cues, poor timing, forgotten lines, and actors falling, fainting or bumping into each other.
The cast dedicated the play to the memory of student Ayk Saakyan. Ayk was himself an entertainer with a wonderful sense of humour.
