World at Lunch

Thursday, February 22, 2007

On February 22, the school participated in the second annual World at Lunch, an exercise to make the students and faculty aware of how the world's population feeds itself -- or doesn't, as the case may be -- every day.

The school was divided into First World, Second World and Third World. Close to half the school made up this third population and were fed a bowl of rice and a glass of water. They were confined to one side of the cafeteria and had no tables, chairs or utensils.

The Second Worlders had a bowl of flavoured rice, a piece of fruit and fruit juice. They sat at tables and ate with a spoon.

A small group of First World diners enjoyed soup, raw vegetables and dip, chicken, steamed brocolli, rice their choice of drinks and cake -- huge slices of cake. They ate and ate as the Third World looked on...

The exercise tied into a presentation prior to lunch by Anne Sophie Fortier of Action contre la faim who spoke on hunger relief efforts around the world.
