Coming off one of its strongest fall sports season in recent memory, Stanstead College honoured its student athletes at the annual Fall Athletic Assembly held Wednesday, November 7.
Headmaster Michael Wolfe opened the evening by reading words of inspiration from legendary NCAA coach John Wooden. “Winning is fun. But winning is not the point. Not giving up is the point. Never being satisfied is the point,” he said. “It’s not winning that counts. What counts is trying.”
Letter awards were presented to top student-athletes at the bantam, junior and senior levels. Several senior students also received Major S awards. In addition, the evening saw the distribution of four MVP trophies.
In cross-country running, team captain Charles Berke of Westmount won this year’s W. Greenshields Memorial Trophy as the school’s top runner. Coach Tracey Harding paid tribute to Charles for his dedication, his ambition to excel and his overall improvement over the course of the season.
In football, quarterback Cedric Moore of Quebec City won the W.A. Ketchen Trophy. Coach Andrew Elliot described Cedric as a multi-talented and cerebral football player. He also praised Cedric for his leadership skills and competitive drive.
Senior girls soccer coach Erik Van Dyke awarded four Major S’s in recognition of the team’s successful ETIAC league-winning season. Among the four, Andrea Dumas of Quebec City won the Merle Griffin Trophy and was described by Coach Van Dyke as the “best all-round girls soccer player who ever wore the Red and White uniform.”
In senior boys soccer, which celebrated a perfect 9-0 ETIAC season, there were six Major S’s. The Bobby Moore Trophy went to co-captains Julian Perrotta of Lorraine, Quebec and Logan Vanasse of Ayer’s Cliff. Perrotta, who also won this award in 2006, was applauded by coach Graham Chandler for his “great talent and tremendous physical presence,” while Vanasse was recognized for his leadership and his ability to always be one step ahead of the opposition.
