To conclude one of its most successful winter sports seasons in recent memory, Stanstead College honoured its top athletes Wednesday, March 12 at the annual Winter Athletic Assembly.
Calling the various successes “an incredible accomplishment” for a school of 185 students, Headmaster Michael Wolfe paid special tribute to Athletic Director André Simard for his dedication to overseeing the school’s athletic program.
“I don’t think we fully appreciate the effort and extra time that goes into this, and I wanted to thank Mr. Simard for everything he does,” said Mr. Wolfe.
Letter awards were given in all sports at all levels. MVP trophies were handed out at the senior level.
The first trophy of the night was presented to the swim team, which had another ETIAC championship season. For the girls, Chloe Duprat of Granger, Indiana won the Trustees’ Cup as the top swimmer and her positive leadership qualities. For the second straight year, Mickael Orlando of Marigot, St-Martin, won the Trustees’ Cup for the boys. Coach Tracey Harding described him as “the heart and soul of the swim team.”
In senior girls basketball, the Bess Ferguson Trophy went to Andrea Dumas of Quebec City. This was no surprise to anyone. Andrea helped lead the Spartans to one of its most successful seasons ever, locally and provincially. Coach Erik Van Dyke described Andrea as “probably the best all-round player I’ve ever coached.”
In senior boys basketball, the E.C. Amaron Trophy was awarded to Montrealer Andew Cho, who coach André Simard described as the best player on the team and in the ETIAC league. “He’s a one-man highlight reel,” he said.
In senior boys hockey, the Dawes Trophy went to Alex Gagnon-Sckoropad of Sherbrooke for the second year. Alex led the provincial champion Spartans in points. As captain, he also played a great role as leader and ambassador, said coach Chris Laperle.
