Huge team victory at Vermont Academy!

Friday evening the boys put forward a solid team effort and really moved the puck with accuracy. Ryan Bedard got us on the board with a blazing wrist shot coming down the wing in the first minute of the game. After a plethora of penalties the team managed to retake the lead before the end of the first period on a beautiful setup by Vinet and Charette with Michael Sinnott scoring on a nifty one-timer. The second began with a great tick-tack-toe play from Jean and Lefort with Andrew Smith finishing the deal. Vermont Academy would then come to within one but Alex Gagnon-Sckoropad scored an absolutely beautiful goal from Lapointe and Riddle during a 3-on-3 segment of the period to give us a two-goal lead again. We then added two more in the third to put the game away.

Essentially we controlled the play from end to end 5-on-5 but unfortunately had to kill off eight minor penalties including three 5-on-3 situations. The game was fast and physical and it was great to see such crisp passing and sound defensive zone coverage tonight. Cedric Moore made 26 of 28 saves and played exceptionally well between the pipes. Well done boys!

Pipers upset Spartans 6-4

The team returned from our February break weekend yesterday and was without a doubt shocked by league rival Alexander Galt today. Although both teams exchanged goals early on, we ended the first period with a 4-2 lead and seemed to be in control of the play. However, we took a series of penalties in the second and essentially gave up four unanswered goals to go down 6-4 after two periods. We were short-handed for most of the period and essentially had to kill 12 of the 15 minutes of play. To Galt’s credit, they played with energy and a purpose and really capitalized on their opportunities. They outworked us today and our lack of defensive zone coverage and apathetic play really did nothing to help us on the scoreboard. Although we controlled the third period in every way and fired twenty shots on net we just couldn’t put anything past their hot goalie.

I hope this serves as a huge wake-up call for the team as we approach the AAESQ Provincial Championships next week. Today’s upset was our first ETIAC loss since the 2004-2005 season.

February 2-3

Spartans win back to back games in Maine

Saturday evening the boys played a very young and hard-working team from North Yarmouth Academy. The game was characterized by much up and down play and many solid scoring chances on both sides. We went up early on a nice play down low from Jesse Halikas to find Olivier Charette. With the score tied at 1 Jesse Halikas then fired home a solid wrist shot in the slot that gave the goalie no chance. We then took over the game and added another on a great passing play in the zone between Ryan Bedard and Julian Perrotta that was finally put home by Pierre-Olivier Jean. North Yarmouth would make it close in the third but Olivier Charette netted his second goal of the game and what proved to be the winner before Ryan Bedard scored in an empty net.

The score of the game was certainly overshadowed by a rather scary moment in the second period when the North Yarmouth goaltender was injured on what seemed to be a rather innocent play. He had to be taken off on a stretcher but last we heard he had regained consciousness and will be okay. Our hearts and thoughts go out to him and as we pray for a speedy recovery.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to the parents from North Yarmouth Academy for hosting us to a fantastic meal after the game. Your hospitality was most appreciated!

Sunday afternoon was a highly anticipated match against Kent’s Hill School. This was a team we had tied and beaten in our home tournament in early January and the top rated Division II team in New England. The first period was fast paced and very exciting, although we had to kill a few penalties early on and essentially were out-shot handily. However, Andrew Smith put us on the board with a nifty move to skate up ice and fired home a perfect wrist-shot up high to give us a 1-0 lead after the first period. We then took over in the second and added a second goal on another great play by Pierre-Olivier Jean. PO skated down hard on the left wing and blasted a solid shot that also beat the goalie up high. The remainder of the second period saw some up-and-down play but we essentially returned the favour and outshot our opponents by a healthy margin.

The third period was unfortunately very uncharacteristic of both teams, for a series of terrible calls on both sides caused a flurry of penalties and really killed the flow of the game. That being said, we buckled down defensively and shut down Kent’s Hill to earn a HUGE 2-0 victory. Kevin O’Connor was stellar between the pipes and the entire group of defensemen played their best collective game of the new year. Excellent effort boys! You just won four out of five prep games in a week.

We now have BCS and Galt before leaving for February break.

New Hampton defeats Spartans 3-1

The team was inconsistent today and essentially made too many unforced errors while playing undisciplined hockey. Although we were up 1-0 after the first period we allowed two goals in the second with the winning goal coming off a short-handed two-on-one play. The third period was characterized by much rough play from both sides until New Hampton put the game away with a three-zone empty-net goal. The credit goes to our opponents today, for they outworked us. A better team effort will be needed on the weekend as we prepare to play North Yarmouth and Kent’s Hill School.

Spartans down Vermont Academy 4-2

This afternoon the team played a hard-fought game against a well-coached team from Vermont Academy. The first period saw some up-and-down hockey and a few minor penalties but essentially ended even at a goal apiece. However, we took over in the second and really controlled the tempo and play from beginning to end. Each team banged home a goal in the third, although we felt as though we had a good grasp on the overall play.

Today was a sound team effort, for all lines played well and the defensemen really moved the puck with poise. In particular, the line of Perrotta, Gagnon-Sckoropad and Bedard really shone by combining for a total of eight points. Julian Perrotta earned today’s hard hat award by scoring all four goals – A BIG NIGHT INDEED! Well done boys! New Hampton is up tomorrow – BE READY.

Spartans earn big win against Bridgton Academy

This afternoon the team played a hard-nosed and gritty team from Maine's Bridgton Academy. The boys got off to a quick start when Frank Riddle fired home the first goal of the game from the point. Alex Gagnon-Sckoropad then doubled the Spartan lead with a nifty screen shot coming down the right wing.

The second period saw a lot of up and down hockey until JP Vinet put the team up 3-0 on a wrist shot in the slot. Bridgton then banged home their first goal of the game on a rebound and scramble in front of the net. However, youngster Ryan Bedard got the goal right back by fooling their goaltender trying to clear the puck and wrapping around for our fourth goal of the game.

Bridgton would cut the lead to 4-3 in the third and actually come very close to netting the equalizer but the Spartans were able to hold them off in the end. This was a huge team win overall and in fact our first win against Bridgton in over seven years. Great job on moving the puck today boys! This victory bodes well as we await Vermont Academy on Tuesday and New Hampton School on Wednesday.

Penalties plague Spartans in 6-2 loss to Tilton

Wednesday’s game was highly anticipated but unfortunately the officials didn’t let the two teams play. We received the first six penalties of the game and had to kill three five-on-three powerplays as well as two five-on-fours in the first period. However, we were still only down 1-0 after 20 minutes. The second was more of the same but we played through it and managed to get the equalizer on a powerplay of our own and then go ahead 2-1 on a nifty wrist shot. Unfortunately, they tied things up just before the period ended.

The third period was more of the same, for the penalties all started again and we simply ran out of gas. Despite allowing six goals Kevin O’Connor was spectacular in nets and really kept us in the game early on.

In the end, we had to kill 28 minutes in penalties (14 penalties to 5) and only allowed one powerplay goal. Although many of the calls were questionable the reality is that we must play more disciplined hockey down the stretch and take advantage of our opportunities. Needless to say, the third period was very unsettling today, for we had a chance to come out on top but just couldn’t get it done. To their credit, Tilton was a solid team with size, grit and speed.

January 11-13

Stanstead College Invitational Tournament... at last!

For the first time in the 10-year history of their own tournament, the Senior Boys Spartans won the Stanstead College Invitational Senior Boys Hockey Tournament January 11 to 13.

The Spartans went 4-0-1 during the three-day event, which saw five teams competing in a round-robin format to earn a spot in Sunday’s final.

Stanstead opened its tournament Friday afternoon with a decisive 9-1 win against King ’s-Edgehill School of Nova Scotia, followed Saturday morning by a 7-2 win against Ontario’s Appleby College.

It was a different story Saturday afternoon, however, when the Spartans faced off against Kents Hill School from Maine. The Huskies won this tournament in 2005 but had failed to make the finals during their past two appearances at this tournament. This year, they came in strong, defeating Rye Country Day School and King’s-Edgehill before facing Stanstead Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans-Huskies game was an intense, evenly matched, back-and-forth three periods, ending in a 2-2 tie.

A 6-1 win for Stanstead in their third game Saturday against Rye Country and Kents Hill’s 6-1 win over Appleby set up a rematch between the two teams in the final.

After a scoreless first period, Kents Hill got on the board in the second. A goal by Pierre-Olivier Jean tied it up, only to see the Huskies move ahead again 2-1 at the end of the second period. Just past the half-minute mark in the third, Stanstead’s Ryan Bedard scored on a powerplay off Jesse Halikas to make it 2-2. Nick Lapointe scored the go-ahead on another powerplay halfway through the third.

Then it was all the Spartans could do to ward off the Huskies, who pulled their goalie with just over a minute to play. A lost faceoff in Stanstead’s end made for a tense final minute with several skirmishes in front of the net before the buzzer sounded.

Stanstead goalie Kevin O’Connor was the game MVP while captain Alex Gagnon-Sckoropad was named the tournament MVP.

Spartans down Northfield Mount Hermon 3-2

This afternoon the team traveled to Massachusetts to play Northfield Mount Hermon. After a long and difficult weekend in Buffalo the boys were determined to get back on a winning a streak and did just that. We came out hard in the first and controlled the play firing twice as many shots on goal as our opponents. Nonetheless, we left the first period down a goal. Fortunately, our powerplay paid dividends today, for we scored two goals in the second frame to take the lead. The first came off a nifty stretch pass from William Aston-Reese that sprung Captain Alex Gagnon-Sckoropad on a breakaway goal. The second resulted from a beautiful passing play from Riddle and Bedard to set up Alex on the backdoor. We then came out storming again in the third banging home an early power-play goal in the first minute of play to take a 3-1 lead. Julian Perrotta and Ryan Bedard set up Alex Gagnon-Sckoropad in the slot to give Alex his third of the game. Although Northfield added a late goal the boys played sound defence and limited the opposition to very few scoring chances. Congratulations on a solid overall effort guys! We spent little time in the penalty box and played better in our end, which was a huge reason for the win. It’s now time to get ready for our home tourney. DO YOU BELIEVE ?

St. Francis Invitational Tournament

This past weekend the team traveled to Buffalo, New York to play in the prestigious St. Francis School Tournament.  Although we finished with a 1-3 record our play kept us in every game.  The trip was nonetheless very positive, for the boys had a blast playing at the HSBC Center, and we showed that we could rival with strong DI teams.  It was also great to have so many parents accompany us on our journey. We now have to build off these games as our own home tournament approaches next weekend.

Note:  Frank Riddle was named to the all-tournament team.
