Stanstead College Hosts CAIS Junior Debating Tournament

Stanstead College was proud to host the CAIS Junior Debating Tournament on Friday, October 14, 2005. Faculty member James Rioux worked very hard to coordinate the tournament and thanks to his initiative, this exciting event returned to Stanstead College after many years.
A total of 52 participants from 13 Quebec schools took part in the Junior Debating Tournament at Stanstead College, Friday, October 14, 2005.
Each school fielded two teams in the three-round contest. In the end, the top school was a team from Miss Edgar's & Miss Cramp's School. Daniel Chen from Lower Canada College was named top debater.
Stanstead's Helen White (pictured standing, far left) was among the Top 10 debaters, placing sixth.
Congratulations to all the participants.

Korai Celik
The tournament was a four round impromptu event with a total of 24 teams and 48 debaters.
Helen White received one of two special awards for being a top junior at this senior event. She also placed in the top 10 for the third straight time this year by finishing tenth out of 48 debaters.
Helen and AJ placed eighth out of a total of 24 teams. They managed to win 3 out of 4 debates.
The girls won 1 out 4, while Marcus and Korai won 2 out of 4. I am pleased with the overall progress and spirit of our debaters, as they performed exceptionally well considering their inexperience.
- Mr. Rioux

A six-member delegation from Stanstead College in the Eastern Townships was judged the top team at The Study’s second annual Model United Nations, held this past weekend at the private school for girls in Westmount.
Stanstead College’s winning team represented Germany at the conference, which brought together 70 students from 12 Quebec independent schools and representing 21 countries.
Stanstead, the only non-Montreal school to participate, also sent a second delegation representing the United States.
Each six-member delegation was divided into three, with two members sitting on the Security Council, two on the Rights and Justice Council, and two on the Economic and Social Council.
Friday and Saturday, the various councils debated current real-world issues: the Security Council discussing the situation in Iraq, the Rights and Justice Council discussing slave trade, and the Economic and Social Council addressing the issue of generic medicine in the Third World. The event also included a General Assembly.
Participating students were expected to research their topics and represent the actual perspectives and policies of their delegate nations.
Earning the highest total score from the judges, Stanstead College’s German delegation included two actual German students along with Canadian, American, and Spanish students. Likewise, Stanstead’s American delegation included one American citizen. In fact, with 224 students, Stanstead College is itself a mini United Nations, home to students from Canada, the U.S. and 13 other countries and territories.
Besides receiving top overall score for its German delegation, Stanstead College’s German representative Hope Hutchins of Georgeville, Qc. won second place for best speaker on the Economic and Social Council, while the school’s U.S. delegate Jeremy Stuart of Ayer’s Cliff, Qc. won second place for best speaker on the Security Council.
The Stanstead German delegates were Julia Mank, Traviss Dorris, Piotr Tomaszewski, Hope Hutchins, Ashley Newman, and Guillermo Ducay. The American delegates were Jeremy Stuart, Jamie Elliot, Sarah Hunt, Guillaume Grant, Aaron Gingras, and Lauren Cuenant.
