Laurence shared the prize in her Grade 10 year and was the sole winner the past two years. She also earned a Senior S. (No Major S awards were presented this season in any sport.)
“Laurence is an exceptional player who never took a day off all year,” said Coach Bernie Pimm at the varsity girls’ team supper Thursday evening. “It’s one things be extremely talented, it’s even more powerful when our best player is our hardest worker.”
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the girls saw no competition outside their rink but have been practicing and scrimmaging since September. This was true of virtually all athletic teams this winter season. In addition, instead of holding a single Athletic Assembly, the teams had individual suppers recap the season and present sports prizes.
Another repeat winner was Ben Chadwick, Grade 12, who won the Amaron MVP Trophy for senior boys basketball for the second year, sharing it with Shaheem Samuel along with Senior S awards.
“On paper, these two are oddly matched, but what they have in common is that they clearly have a passion for the game of basketball,” said Coach Duane Liverpool. “They are talented physically, motivated and unselfish. They look to involve their teammates to find the best shot, not necessarily their shot.”
The Dawes MVP Trophy for varsity boys hockey was shared by seniors Jeremy Tremblay and Ryan Hopkins, the two captains. Both boys also won Senior S awards.
“They had to lead in a year that has been unmatched in 50 years,” said Coach Matthew Thompson. “Your skills on the ice speak for themselves. Your ability make others on the ice better is noticeable. Your desire be leaders through effort and be true Spartans is what makes coaches proud.”
Ryan is in his second year at Stanstead, while Jeremy worked his way up through the prep program over several years.
In senior girls basketball, the Bess Ferguson MVP Trophy was also shared by Rosemary Lefebvre, Grade 11, and Mariama Barry, Grade 12.
“Nobody works on her game more than she does, nobody lives or dies on her success or failure, nobody cares more about the happiness of the team and nobody loves the game more,” said Coach Erik Van Dyke of Rosemary Lefebvre, who noted a vast improvement in her game in the past year.
Mariama Barry was recognized for the growth in her game and growth as a teammate and a leader.
