Hockey News: Olympics Bound, NHL Ranked

Two Stanstead College alumnae have been selected for the Czech National women’s hockey team to compete in the 2022 Beijing Olympics next month.  
 
Michaela Peizlova and Katerina Bukolska (2016) have represented Czech Republic in the U18 world championships as well as the World Cup since 2012. This year, they will be playing for their country in Beijing . Both came to Stanstead for Grade 11 and 12.  
 
Michaela embraced the Stanstead lifestyle with open arms. While playing hockey, she earned a Major S in Grade 11 and a Major S plus the MVP Trophy in Grade 12. In addition, she won a Major S in tennis and the Tennis Shield in both Grade 11 and Grade 12. 
 
“She is one of the most naturally talented players I’ve coached,” said her former Stanstead coach Brittany Sharman.“She was an all-around nice kid and a pleasure to coach.” 
 
After graduating, Michaela continued her athletic and academic career at Clarkson University. In her first year, she was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team and won a NCAA National Championship. In total, Michaela won two National Championships, played in 148 games, and tallied 64 goals and 102 assists for a total of 166 points. Currently, she now plays in the Naisten Liiga in Helsinski, Finland.  
 
Coach Sharman described Katerina as the player everyone wanted to be a part of their team. “She is a versatile player, which makes her a core player in any team," she said.  
 
In Grade 11 and 12, Katerina was awarded a Senior S in hockey. After graduating from Stanstead, she played one year with the Ottawa Lady Senators and went on to play three years at Merrimack College. Katerina had 16 points in 83 games. Currently, she plays in the Svenska damhockeyligan in Sweden.

The NHL released their 2022 Central Scouting Midterm Rankings January 12, 2022. Both the former and current captain of the varsity boys hockey team found themselves on the list. 
 
Liam Steele, the current captain of the varsity boys hockey team, is ranked 83rd among North American Skaters. Liam is in his second and final year at Stanstead. In Grade 11, Liam received a Senior S in hockey and committed to Cornell University. He is currently a prefect in Cowen House. Next year Liam will be playing for the Chilliwack Chiefs in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).  
 
Former captain, Ryan Hopkins (2021), is ranked 158th in the North American Skaters division. He attended Stanstead for Grades 10 and 11. In his first year at the College, he received a Major S for hockey, and in Grade 11, he co-won the Dawes MVP Trophy with Jeremy Tremblay and received a Senior S. (No Major S's were awarded during this COVID season.)

Ryan is currently playing in the BCHL for the Penticton Vees. This past year, he committed to University of Maine and will continue his academic and athletic career in the fall of 2022.
 
 
“It is great to see Liam and Ryan on this list. Both players are extremely dedicated to their craft and improvement,” said varsity boys head coach Matthew Thompson. “Ryan has been able to establish himself in the BCHL, and Liam has been a thrill to watch develop here at Stanstead. Different players with different skill sets, but no question both have bright futures in hockey.”
