Athlete of the Week: Diego Badillo Hernandez

Penalty kicks are among the most stressful moments in all of sports, especially in sudden-death playoffs, and especially for the goalie. But this week’s Diego Badillo Hernandez doesn’t shy away from pressure. Instead, this young man thrives on pressure.

In the junior boys soccer semi-final against Salesien, this Grade 8 student saved 2 out of 4 penalty shots, including a remarkable diving save to earn the Spartans a trip to the finals. And in those finals, after shutting out the #1 team in regulation thanks to two huge saves, Diego found himself once again facing do-or-die penalty shots, and once again he rose to the occasion, getting his hand on 3 out of the 4 Alexander Galt shots, despite theses shots being perfectly aimed at the corners. The loss was a heartbreak, but, tough and gritty from Mexico City, Diego can and should hold his head high as Athlete of the Week.
