Volleyball: A Day of Firsts

This year the girls came in ready to work and quickly showed they were a force to reckon with. Yesterday, was a great opportunity for the girls to showcase how far they have come since November and more specifically since last year when it all started.

BCS has always been an excellent opponent who play with class and respect. With a nice fan base in the gym, it was setting up to be a perfect afternoon.

In the first game, Stanstead looked more organized and took a quick lead. They never looked back and finished the first set 25-10. In the second game, BCS started to figure out their serve and caused some trouble for the Lady Spartans. The girls re-grouped and finished off the second set with excellent serving from Valeria Rodriguez, 25-16.

In the final set, BCS looked to be finding their stride. They got up early on Stanstead due to some excellent serving. Stanstead called a timeout in order to re-organize and settle the pace. It seemed to work, as Stanstead went on a 9-point run to take the lead back and control of the set. The final point fell on the BCS side of the net and the Spartans were victorious 25-21.

There were some excellent individual plays by Kenya Desautels to save points off dives and finish points at the net, incredible serving from Alison Barlow, Marisol Calva and Valeria Rodriguez. Unbelievably controlled defensive bumps by Daliah Sirhan and Dana Nguyen in the back court. Finally, our attack was solid from Vicky Azar, Audrey Morin and MK Koketso who continues to control the back court as well as providing offence. It truly was a team effort, right down to my sidekick for the day, Ariadna Meza who did a great job to keep me calm.

 

As a coach it was one of those days where you got to sit back and enjoy your players execute the game plan. They were composed, focused and played to their ability. Even with an electric gym, which could play on the nerves of the girls, they took it in stride and stayed focused on the match. Everyone contributed and everyone played to their potential. It was truly our best team effort of the season and where better than our first historic home game in the Mackay Gym. Hopefully the season continues with effort like this as the potential to succeed is definitely there.

 

Wednesday was a proud moment for me as a coach and should be a proud moment for the girls who have worked hard to get where they are. A huge thanks to all the kids who came out and supported and made the gym come alive. It was truly a great Stanstead moment for me and one I will cherish always.
