Spartans Bring Home the Banners

It was a highly successful athletic weekend for the Stanstead College Spartans in the gym and in the arena.

On Sunday, the senior boys basketball team and their senior girls (D2) counterparts earned their respective championship banners at the annual Anderson-Bailly Small Schools Tournaments hosted by Stanstead College. This is the third year in a row the girls have won the Bailly Tournament, while the boys last brought home the Anderson banner in 2014.

The girls were undefeated during their weekend, facing West Island College in the final and winning 38-18. Emily Willis was named team all-star, while Mackenzy St-Pierre was tournament MVP.

The boys saw some excitement during their round-robin event, winning two games by a single point, losing their only game to BCS by a score of 40-44. This set up a rematch between the two rival teams. While even going into the second half, the Spartans pulled away from the Bears in the final quarter to win 54-40. Richard Pan was team all-star, with captain Alexis Bernier named tournament MVP.

Over in the Pat Burns Arena, the Varsity Girls Hockey Spartans hosted the North American Prep Hockey Association league championship, earning the top prize for the fourth year in a row. Stanstead shut out Trinity College School and King’s-Edgehill to earn a spot in the final, where they defeated Northwood 5-1.

The Midwest Prep Hockey League playoffs were also held this past weekend in Albany, NY. The varsity boys earned wins over Rice Memorial and Lake Forest Academy to earn a spot in the final against returning champions Ridley College. Unfortunately, the Spartans fell 3-0 to the Tigers.
