Stanstead Spartans Celebrate Major Wins

Stanstead College celebrated a number of important athletic victories this past week, capped off Monday with a thrilling win by the Varsity Girls Hockey Spartans in the North American Prep Hockey Association (NAPHA) championship game.

The playoff win was the girls’ fifth straight NAPHA championship, coming off their first-place regular season with a record of 6-0-2.

Stanstead hosted the NAPHA playoffs over the weekend at the Pat Burns Arena, where the Spartans won 6-2 over Rice Prep, 7-0 over King’s-Edgehill, 3-0 over Nichols in the semi, and 3-2 in overtime versus Rothesay-Netherwood School in the final.

RNS scored first in the championship game, with the Spartans matching the goal late in the second period. RNS went ahead 2-1 at 9:21 in the third, Stanstead tying it up again at 4:44, taking the game into overtime. Laurence Frenette scored the OT game winner.

Meanwhile, on the varsity boys hockey side, the Spartans travelled to Albany, NY to take part in the Prep School Challenge where they defeated Lawrenceville School 5-1 in the final of the eight-team tournament. Earlier in the month, the boys edged Upper Canada College to win the Proctor Invitational at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ont.

In basketball, the Junior Boys Spartans earned the RSEQ Div. 4, Level 1 regular season, capping it off with a championship win at the finals this past Sunday. The boys defeated Massawippi 51-28 and then Montcalm 43-33. This was the first winning season for the junior boys since Stanstead joined RSEQ.

The school’s curling and swimming ETIAC finals take place this Wednesday.
