Elisabeth Shane of Ayer’s Cliff, Que. earned her second MVP trophy of the school year, winning the Bess Ferguson Trophy and her second Major S for senior girls basketball.
The Grade 11 student, who was unfortunately unable to attend Tuesday’s Winter Athletic Assembly at Centenary Church, was often the difference between winning and losing. “With Elisabeth on the floor, we were a .500 team. On the ones she missed we were clearly 0 and 5,” said Coach Erik Van Dyke.
This past fall, Elisabeth won the Merle Griffin MVP Trophy for senior girls soccer.
In varsity girls hockey, Laurence Frenette (Grade 11, Boisbriand, Que.) won the Dugie Ross Trophy for the second year in a row along with a Major S. “I haven’t seen anyone play with this level of resilience in my years as a coach,” said Coach Bernie Pimm. “For her to score our winning goal in our championship final in front of the raucous home crowd was extremely gratifying.”
Laurence’s MVP co-winner last year, Hannah Johnson (12PG, Readfield, MA), earned a Major S for her consistency, focus and hard work.
Keita Oki (Grade 12, Tokyo, Japan) won the Trustees Cup for swimming for the second year in a row. “He finished races so far ahead of the competition he could have left the pool and dried off before the other swimmers got to the end,” said Coach Shawn Belknap-Keet.
For the varsity boys hockey team, the Dawes Trophy and a Major S were won by team captain Devon de Vries (Grade 12, St-Lazare, Que.), “the hardest working, skilled hockey player I have ever seen,” said Coach Matt Thompson. “He leads through example and makes everyone else better.”
Major S awards for varsity boys hockey also went to Philippe Jacques (Grade 12, Quebec City), Shaun Mahoney (Grade 12, Saint-Augustin-de-Demaures, Que.) and Ryan Hopkins (Grade 10, Lunenberg, NS).
In senior boys basketball, first-year player and team captain Ben Chadwick (Grade 11, Ottawa, Ont.) won the Amaron Trophy and a Major S for his dedication, leadership and commitment. “He is the type of person and player that any coach would welcome with open arms,” said Coach Duane Liverpool.
A second basketball Major S went to Benjamin Koo (Grade 12, Hong Kong).
In volleyball, a Major S was awarded to Valeria Rodriguez Fernandez (Grade 12, Mexico City).
