Little Things Count More Than Ever

Sumomo Susuta, Grade 12
How are you? Are you still enjoying your time at home, or are you starting to get bored staying inside your house? How are the classes going? Isn’t it weird how you go to class and you see someone that just woke up at 4 am in the morning, while someone is getting ready for bed at 11 pm?

At inconvenient times like this, many people lose focus on the small things in life. I would like to talk about the significance of doing those small things.

After I came back to Japan in March for the break, every day I would hear on the news about Coronavirus and the number of cases confirmed. Many famous people got infected, such as Prince Charles, Sophie Trudeau, Tom Hanks, and some have passed away from health complications due to coronavirus, people like Sergio Rossi and Jay Benedict. At the beginning, when corona started, although they had heard the news, many people did not stay home or were as wary as they should have been. Some people were like, “Many other people are going out as well. Just one more person out there won’t make a difference.” But this one small act became a big problem in the world after so many people thought the same thing.

I’m talking about coronavirus, but I’m sure you all have heard enough about it on the news and surroundings every day. Instead, let’s think about other situations where a small act can create a big outcome, whether it is good or bad, such as the free-dress days we have throughout the year. Most of us pay only $2, but by everyone paying the right amount, it totals up to more than $500, which could be a genuine help for someone who’s in need. Or a pizza sale, where many people buy pizza and the money is gathered by the student council to help the girl in Zambia. We also had a book sale for two schools, which raised up to more than $1200. These are when it has a positive outcome by gathering the small things done by many individuals.

From these situations, I’m sure all of us know how much of an impact a small thing can have. Remember, there’s never a person too cool to care about small things in life. Essentially, life is all about small things, and living in 2020 is all about being careful. It’s hard for us to do many things now in this situation, but there are still many things we can do, such as having a new habit. Habits can impact you in many ways, and good habits lead you to become a successful person. Although changing a habit is not easy, right now, we all have a little more time at home you can use. It can be writing a journal, it can be reading a book, or it can be waking up at a certain time every morning. You just have to place it into your daily routine until it becomes your own habit, and it could help you in the future. You have the time to do it.

But for now, just sending a “good morning” or “hey, how are you?” to someone, being positive, and showing your smile can make someone’s day.

Just stay home, make sure you don’t forget to sanitize and wash hands, make sure you wear masks, and just spend your time with your family. Stay safe and keep up with your hard work!
