New Coaching Additions to Varsity Hockey

Logan Vanasse moves to varsity boys
The varsity boys hockey team coaching staff is now complete with the addition of veteran coach Logan Vanasse, a 2009 graduate of the Spartans program and a three-term student-athlete. Mr. Vanasse has been assistant coach of the prep hockey team the past several seasons. As a former goalie, Coach Vanasse has a great ability to analyze the big picture and look at key situations differently.

“I am pleased to add such a positive and cerebral hockey mind to the varsity staff,” said Mr. Rioux. “Logan is a player’s coach with a tremendous eye for detail. He’s an excellent coach and outstanding person. His experience with the U16 program will serve him well at the varsity level.”  

Mr. Vanasse will join head coach Matthew Thompson behind the bench but it won’t be for the first time; during the 2013-14 season, Mr. Vanasse was a volunteer with the varsity boys team and the two teamed up to make a tremendous playoff run when the head coach at the time was absent for the birth of his daughter. The combination of experienced youth and overall strong communications skills from both coaches will make for a very dynamic duo.

“I am thrilled to have Coach Vanasse on this coaching staff,” said Coach Thompson. “I know he will always be looking out for what is best for our student-athletes on the ice as well and in the classroom.”

Mr. Vanasse said he was looking forward to being part of the varsity boys team again.

“Stanstead College continues to be an outstanding option for student-athletes to develop,” said Mr. Vanasse. “I look forward to working with Coach Thompson to build relationships with our players that will allow them to have success on and off the ice.”

In addition to coaching hockey, Mr. Vanasse is also a member of the school’s admissions team. A native of Ayer’s Cliff, Quebec, he will continue to live on campus with his wife Genevieve and daughters Leila (3) and Charlotte (1).
 

Courtney Tougas joins varsity girls
Courtney Tougas joins the girls hockey program as our new assistant coach. Ms. Tougas is a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario and recently worked at Ontario Hockey Academy where she was an assistant coach and also senior school teacher. Before OHA, Ms. Tougas coached in Penticton at the Okanagan Hockey Academy, where she was the head varsity girls coach from 2017-2019. 

On the ice, Ms. Tougas grew up playing in northern Ontario before playing for University of Toronto, where she studied physical education. She then completed a degree in administration at Lakehead University. 

“Courtney is a reliable professional with much experience at such a young age,” said Mr. Rioux. “I look forward to working with her to improve the day-to-day experiences of our student-athletes and further developing an already outstanding culture.”

Ms. Tougas will be living in Cowen House and will be teaching Contemporary World/Finance.

Head girls hockey coach Bernie Pimm described Ms. Tougas as a smart, experienced addition to the girls hockey program.

“As we head into a new period of growth at Stanstead girls hockey, I am extremely excited to have Courtney here supporting our upcoming efforts to make our program one of the best in North America,” he said.
