A New Way to Watch Hockey

This weekend, Stanstead College Hockey will debut its new streaming system at the Pat Burns Arena via Gameonstream. It will bring a whole new experience to watching games and practices online.

This Friday, the varsity girls scrimmage will be streamed at 4:30 pm. Livestreamed games will include varsity boys vs Bishop’s College school at 1:00 pm Saturday and 2:00 pm Sunday. The prep U16 team will play BCS at the Pat Burns Arena Saturday at 3:30 pm, live-streamed, and then travel to BCS Sunday for a 10:00 am game (not live-streamed).

Team practices will also be streamed on the site.

Registration for Stanstead’s Gameonstream account is currently free of charge.

The new streaming system includes an installation of five new cameras: a camera above each blue line, a camera above each goal line and one facing the benches. The cameras at the blue lines and goal lines will have an angle similar to a bird’s eye view. The image coming from those cameras will be static. The bench-facing camera will continuously follow the play of the game, moving as the puck moves.

The viewer will be able to switch and choose which angle they would prefer to watch the game. It gives the viewer angles they would not normally have the chance to experience.

The system previously in place had a single camera that was manually operated by a student or staff member.

Gameonstream is a Toronto-based company whose platform is already in place at a number of independent schools in North America. It allows for games to be broadcasted live or on demand.

“Having a permanent camera system in place gives the opportunity for fans to watch more,” said James Rioux, Director of Hockey Operations. “Long term, this system will give us access to film practice and inner squad games live. Or we can archive and access them after the fact.”

Access can be found through the SC hockey page and here.
