Former Spartan Picked by Calgary Flames

Former Spartan Cole Huckins (2017-2019) was drafted into the NHL Saturday by the Calgary Flames, the second Stanstead player to be picked by Flames within the past ten year.

Cole spent two years at Stanstead playing with the Varsity Boys Spartans, earning a Major S in his second year as a Grade 10 student. He was drafted at the end of the school year in the first round by the QMJHL Acadie-Bathurst Titans in his native New Brunswick, where he returned to complete his schooling.

"From the day Cole arrived on campus for his visit when he was still only in 8th grade, it was clear that he had a legitimate chance of hockey being a major part of his life path," says Varsity Boys Hockey Coach Matt Thompson. "As a player in 9th and 10th grade, Cole was trusted in all situations, never showed fear playing against much older competition and played the game the right way."

Cole’s father, Phil, is a Stanstead alumnus (1981) and originally from Ogden. His uncle, Mike Huckins, is the school’s director of facilities.

The 6’3”, 200-pound centre joins Mark Jankowski (2012) as former Spartans drafted by the Flames. Mark was picked in the 1st round, 21st overall by the Flames in 2012, the highest selected high school player in draft history. After making his NHL debut in 2016, he played three full seasons with Calgary (2017-20) before signing with Pittsburgh in 2020.

In addition, Spartan Alex Campbell (2018) was drafted in round 3, 65th overall by Nashville Predators in 2019, and Spartan Danny Hobbs (2007) was drafted in the 7th round, 198th overall by the New York Rangers.
