Quotes to Get You Through the End of the Year

By Joseph Riddell, Grade 12
As we all know, the school year is quickly approaching the end. Whether you are headed off to university or coming back to Stanstead next year, we soon will be all entering a new chapter of our lives. New opportunities allow us to grow and try and better ourselves along the way. So here are three simple but inspiring quotes I thought were important to apply in one’s everyday life.

“Let your challenges mold you, not fold you.”
We all face challenges throughout our lives but we have to find ways to embrace them rather than let them be an excuse for what we didn’t accomplish. As some of you may know, I am dyslexic. This means that what might take some of you two minutes to read will take me four. Writing is also a task that requires much more effort and concentration on my part since it does not come as easily. However, I now realize that while dyslexia has been challenging, it has taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. Since my brain functions in a different manner, and I often had barriers at school, it forced me to think outside the box, which has been useful. As we all grow and learn, please keep this in mind. When times are a little tougher and challenges seem overwhelming , they will allow you to become a better person.

“Never mistake motion for action.” – Ernest Hemingway
Even though you may skate around in circles, unless you’re in the right place, you won’t be able to score a goal. Although it may feel as though skating all over the place is useful, it leads to no action taking place. Without action, the time we allocate to motion isn't meaningful. In a similar way, Stanstead College is a very busy place. Our schedules are filled with sports, classes, homework and extracurriculars. Sometimes we forget to take time off to reflect on our goals and where we want to go. We are all at a point in our lives where we will have to make life decisions. If we are given all the required tools but never take action, never reflect on the path we want to embark on, we may not be able to make the best decision. For instance, when I have to clear my head, I go and do something so I can have peace and think on my own.

If you look at what you have in life, you'll always have more. If you look at what you don't have in life, you'll never have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey
I think this is very applicable to our lives especially in an age where we are constantly surrounded by social media platforms. We have been given a great opportunity by simply being here at Stansted. Many children around the world do not have access to three meals a day, education, or even the chance to play sports. We must look at all the opportunities we have in our life to realize just how lucky we are. It is easy to forget how grateful we should be since we constantly see how great other people’s lives are on our phone. By applying this to your life, I hope it sheds light on all that you have been given so you can appreciate it even more.
