SG Soccer White: Last Regular Season Game

By Erik Van Dyke
It had been less than 14 hours since we’d left it all on Coulter Field, after 80 minutes of blood-and-guts soccer. Less than 14 hours since we’d battled Alexander Galt for the coveted ETIAC banner. Less than 14 hours since that triumphant bus ride home.

With so little turnaround time, there was bound to be a letdown, physically (we were very tired and had only 13 healthy players) AND emotionally, against BCS in the final game of the regular season. Especially since this game had no bearing on anything, as we’d already wrapped up first place in the league, regardless of the outcome of this game.

So yes, there was a letdown. Despite the final 3-0 score, we played much of the game like a team that mostly wanted the game to be over with so we could grab lunch, hit the hot tub and take a nap.

That said, there were still some proud moments and nice highlights:
  • Valentine Savoie came within a foot of scoring her first goal on a well-hit drive (that resulted in Gloria pouncing on the rebound for the second goal of the game).
  • Daphney Dozois also barely missed out on her first goal of the year, as the BCS keeper made a reflex kick save on a strong shot that was labelled for the bottom left corner.
  • Gloria Riddell and Camryn Moore executed an indirect kick from the side of the box to perfection, with Camryn bending one top left for the game’s final goal.
  • Positionally, Sofia Martinez had her best game of the season.
  • And last but certainly not least, Vivianne Suverza earned Player Of The Game honours with her confident and fearless play. Vivianne was not to be denied this game – she was in the right positions, she cleared the ball well, and she was first to every ball.
Come to think of it, that’s what’s supposed to happen when some players have a subpar game, i.e. their teammates respond and pick them up. And that’s what happened here. Battered, bruised and fatigued, the Red & White still found a way, with players stepping up when needed.

Not the worst way to finish off the regular season.

Next up, The Playoffs. Semi-finals Monday vs Alexander Galt, who will be out for revenge.
The ETIAC playoff trophy. One more brass ring to go for. Can we dig deep one more time?
