SG Basketball: The Finish Line

By Erik Van Dyke
Your Stanstead College Spartans punched their ticket to the RSEQ D3 championship game this past Tuesday at home with a comprehensive semi-final 61-33 victory over Les Carnicas from LaRuche. After a barrage of buckets in the first quarter where it appeared neither team could miss, the Red & White clamped down defensively, allowing a paltry 19 points the rest of the way while keeping the offensive pressure firmly on their opponents. In their most efficient game of the season, they went 28 for 67 from the field for an impressive shooting percentage of 42%, with no fewer than six players scoring 6 points or more.

That said, the most noteworthy part of the game was how athletically hungry the players were, treating every missed shot like an opportunity for an offensive rebound and treating every loose ball like a personal challenge. They physically imposed their will on LaRuche, dominating 50/50 balls and ripping the ball out of their opponents’ hands on a regular basis.

And the athleticism did not stop there, as there were several highlight fast-break baskets that you just don’t see that often in girls basketball. Cases in point: Melissa to Camryn (ridiculous twisting catch on the full sprint) followed immediately by Melissa to Bernie (ridiculous-er leaping grab on the full sprint), with both players finishing at full speed. With the girls playing THAT hard, it was an athletic mismatch, and by the fourth quarter the game was out of reach.

So this brings us to the final game of the season, the championship final, 4:30 pm this Saturday @ Triolet (who upset Salesien in their semi). For reasons unbeknownst to anybody, Triolet will be playing in front of their rabid home fans despite us finishing first in the league, so for ONE MORE TIME your Spartans are going to have to go into hostile territory to win a critically important game.

But no one has handled that situation better than us. Bring it on.
