SG Soccer Red, Running Win Big on Wednesday

In a dramatic underdog performance, the Senior Girls (Red) Spartans captured the ETIAC playoff trophy Wednesday, defeating Alexander Galt Regional 2-1.
Placing second in the regular season behind Stanstead’s other senior girls team (White), who were eliminated in a semi-final against Galt, the Reds earned the final spot by defeating Massey-Vanier 3-1 on Monday.

Already playing without subs, The Red Spartans saw their numbers depleted between Monday and Wednesday due to illness. The coaches brought up five junior players to join their ranks for the final. Already, the team consisted primarily of Grade 9 and 10 students and were now padded with players as young as 12 years old.

The Spartans more than held their own throughout the game, with keeper Penelope Lavoie’s steady hands saving the day a number of times against the Galt offence. Rosalie Tremblay scored midway through the half on a breakaway, with Galt tying it up as the first half came to a close. At the tail end of the second, Rosalie did it again, battling a Galt defender to keep the ball in play as it skimmed the sideline before sending it into the low corner of the net off her left foot.

Wednesday also saw the cross-country running team win their ETIAC season, having dominated meets throughout the season. Nonetheless, the team likewise travelled to BCS with short members due to illness. In addition to winning the banner, the following were the results for the day:

Bantam boys: Liam Sumun 1st; junior boys: Jacob LeBlanc 1st; junior girls: Florence Blanchette 2nd, Axelle Beaudoin 4th, Kate Collins 7th; senior girls: Halle Khanna 1st, Reagan Lynch 3rd, Mia Eichholzer 5th.

This was the first time the Stanstead cross-country team had won the banner since 2011. Prior to that, we have to go back to 1974!

As mentioned, the Stanstead Senior Girls (White) Spartans won the regular season ETIAC banner for the second year in a row last week, while the bantam boys won their banner for the first time since their undefeated 2002 season. The bantam boys were eliminated in a semi-final against MVR on Monday.
