Academic Trips Send Students North, South, East, West
Last week, the entire student body of Stanstead College left campus and set off in all directions for the annual academic class trips.
Leaving Thursday morning, Grade 10 students bussed to Quebec City, where they visited the Manege Militaire for an interactive activity in the life of a solider under General Wolfe and General Montcalm, participated in a scavenger hunt of downtown Quebec City, went on a haunted city tour and enjoyed an activity at the Morrin Centre on life as a convict.
Grade 11s travelled to Ottawa, where they visited the Canadian War Museum, Supreme Court of Canada, National Gallery of Canada, the "Diefenbunker" and the Canadian Museum of History. They also enjoyed a concert at the National Arts Centre by Canadian singer-songwriter Mo Kenney.
Junior students took to the woods, with Grades 7s and 8s travelling over the border toCoutts 4H/Sisken Camp on Salem Lake. There they took part in obstacle and rope courses, walked a science-nature hike, learned survival skills, canoed, swam and discovered nature, all with bonfires and overnight camping.
The Grade 9s, meanwhile, participated in the "Adventurous Journey" component of their Duke of Edinburgh program. Travelling to Parc National Mégantic, the students set off to hike the mountains of the park -- Mont St-Joseph, Mont Victoria and Mont Mégantic. They then set up camp and cooked their own food before bedding down for the night, followed by more hiking in the morning and a visit to the park's Astrolab.
Finally, the Grade 12s split in two directions as part of their university prep workshops. One group travelled to the University of Vermont in Burlington, while a second visited Concordia and McGill University in Montreal. Back on campus overnight, the seniors enjoyed workshops the next day in anticipation of submitting their post-secondary applications.
