Staying Busy While 6 Feet Apart

By Kyra Borsoi
When classes are done and homework is completed, the students have the opportunity to participate in weekend activities -- known in Quebec as “animation.”

As most things this year are different, animation has had to take on a bigger role.

In the past, weekend activities have consisted of trips off campus to Walmart, restaurants, malls, or trampoline parks. Due to the current state, off-campus outings have almost entirely ceased to exist. Animation has transformed correspondingly.

“We had to reinvent ourselves because we relied heavily on off-campus activities,” said Adam Spirk, who is Stanstead’s animation/trip coordinator. “Now we are constant entertainment -- truly an animation team for the students.”

Although the work has increased, the positives still outweigh the challenges; there are now a greater variety of activities at hand for students.

So far, students have been able to participate in activities such as bingo, a volleyball tournament, a putting/chipping tournament, bonfires, glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, Fear Factor, scavenger hunt, tie-dying T-shirts, quesadilla night, sushi night, formal steak dinner nights, flag football and movies outside.

Grocery trips to the local Marché Traditions has been one off-campus activity that’s had huge success. After hours, the store opens strictly for Stanstead College students who truly enjoy and are grateful for the short outing off campus.

In the past it had been a struggle to get kids to participate in on-campus activities. However, that has quickly changed.

“Students truly are appreciative of the activities that are being held. They aren’t taking them for granted,” said Spirk.

At Stanstead, our number-one priority is to ensure that each student is staying safe. With this in mind, our animation team continues to bring joy to students every single weekend. Students participate in activities within their grade-level bubble, with masks, while remaining six feet apart.
