Luke DeLaBruere, Grade 12, of Derby, Vt, was once again a top prize winner at Stanstead College’s 2025 Baccalaureate and Prize-Giving Service Saturday, capping off a stellar career at the school by winning the Pitcher Prize, the school’s top award.
The Pitcher Prize is presented to the student who has exerted the greatest influence for good. In addition, Luke earned the highest overall average in Grade 12, the Sean Kevin Ingutia Music Award for contribution to music in the school (shared with Eric Zhang), the Spofforth Trophy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, the Arthur E. Curtis Jr. Award (to the top student entering an engineering program), the Bowman Hall Award as the top male student-athlete, as well as the Grade 12 Math, English, Chemistry and Physics Prizes.
Luke also won the Black Sweater for the third term, presented to a student with the high average in the term who has also won a Major S athletic prize.
As co-head prefect, Luke addressed the graduating class on the topic of coping as life goes on. His co-head prefect, Sofia Martinez Ajzenman, spoke to the class about adapting under pressure.
The guest speaker for the morning was Suzy McDonald, Class of 1995 and the incoming head of school. Ms. McDonald spoke about the impact Stanstead College had made in her life as well as a vision for the school that included adapting to the times and the next wave of technology.
“As we embark on this exciting period of renewal, we will lean on the collective wisdom, experience and passion of this community, your voices, your ideas and your continued engagement will be essential as we chart this next chapter,” she said. “Together, we shall ensure that the institution remains a beacon of excellence, adapting to the future while honouring the past.”
In addition to conferring certificates, prizes and diplomas, the service included a presentation to former board chair and longtime trustee Philip Webster. Mr. Webster received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the office of the Governor-General of Canada. The award was presented by former board chair Joseph Levy and Jacques Duchesneau, aide-de-camp to the Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Manon Jeannotte.
Following this, Dead of Students Roger Marino announced the head prefects for the upcoming school year. Congratulationsvto Tammy Osibanjo (Edmonton, AB) and Josh Lippmann (Newport, VT).
Benjamin Rioux, Grade 9 of Stanstead, received the Wilder Shield, presented to the junior student with the most positive influence, while Grade 12 student Annie LaMantia of Vancouver, Washington, earned the Head of School’s Prize as an active and positive citizen in the Stanstead College community.
Rosalie Tremblay (Grade 11, Sherbrooke, Que.) won both the Shirley Wolter Trophy as the top senior female athlete and the Trueman-McFadyen Award as highest academically achieving top senior female athlete. Zackarie Michaud (Grade 12, Grand Falls, NB) won the Thomas Johnson Memorial Trophy as the all-round senior boy athlete of the year.
Junior athletes of the year were Elizabeth Bélanger (Grade 8, Granby, Que.) and Mederick Bizier (Grade 9, Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, Que.)
