“The level of intensity and competition in last night’s gold medal game was simply incredible,” said James Rioux, Director of Hockey Operations.
Opening the scoring for Team Canada was none other than our very own Alexia Aubin. Just five minutes into the game, Alexia parked herself in front of the net on the power play. Ava Murphy took a shot from the blue line that was deflected not once, but twice. Alexia had the final tip to bring Canada to a 1-goal lead over USA.
Late in the second period, Canada had an odd man rush. Karel was able to snag the rebound for another quick shot to Jocelyn Amos, who knocked the loose puck in the net. This third goal for Canada would ultimately prove to be the game-winner, with USA battling back to make it 3-2 for Canada at the final buzzer.
“It gave me goosebumps,” said Mr. Rioux. “We are all very excited for Canada’s big win and especially about Karel’s and Alexia’s contributions.”
The pair not only had an outstanding gold medal game but their presence was felt throughout the whole tournament, each coming out with a plus/minus of +3. Alexia grabbed 5 points (1G 4A), while Karel had 4 points (1G 3A). In the semi-final game against Finland, Karel scored the game winner and received the Player for the Game for Canada.
“For Team Canada, they played exactly the way they do for us,” said Stanstead varsity girls head coach Bernie Pimm. “They pulled their team into the fight, particularly, when it mattered most.”
Earlier in the tournament, Team Canada suffered one of only two losses to Team USA, getting blanked 7-0.
Another notable performance was from Grade 12 varsity girls player, Svenja Voigt. Wearing #11 for Team Germany, she appeared in all 5 games and scored one goal in the 2-6 loss against Czech Republic. Germany ended the tournament in last place.
“As their coach, I feel lucky to be able to work with them and I am extremely grateful for the resources and support we have to develop all of our girls’ growth,” said Coach Pimm. “These girls are clear evidence that we are blessed with a goldmine of talent here at Stanstead College.”
Congratulations to Alexia, Karel and Svenja! You have made the Stanstead community proud, and we can’t wait to welcome you home.
