Preparing for Distance Learning

March 30, 2020: Stanstead College will be starting the third term using various distance-learning solutions in each class. Faculty will be spending the next two weeks preparing their classes to be ready to go by Tuesday, April 14. Here is information on what you can expect and what you will need.

What you need to get set up at home

Infrastructure
  • computer/tablet that has video capabilities
  • high-speed internet access
  • A dedicated, comfortable space for learning and for designated class time
Platforms
We will be using the following platforms as our primary instruction tools:

Blackbaud, where students will:
  • see their class pages;
  • receive and submit assignments;
  • find helpful resource links for each class;
  • find the schedule to follow each day;
  • view daily and weekly announcements.
Microsoft Teams, where students will:
  • view video lectures;
  • participate in live chat sessions or live classes;
  • provide feedback and interact with teachers.

Getting set up
We have been using the Blackbaud platform throughout the year, so you and your child will already be familiar with logging into Blackbaud to see information about each of their classes. They can see the individual class pages under the "Classes” tab. Information will be updated on these pages regularly in the coming weeks.

You can help get your child set up with Microsoft Teams using this guide. If you have trouble with this set-up process, contact: ITHelpdesk@stansteadcollege.com.

We recommend that your child activate Microsoft Teams the week of April 6 so that we can troubleshoot any technical difficulties that may arise.

Schedule for classes
We will be following the schedule as it reads in the Blackbaud calendar. This is the same seven-day timetable that the students followed during the first two terms. However, we will be following the schedule for a “shortened day” (that is, a Wednesday schedule). The day begins at 8:00 am and ends at 12:40 pm.

PLEASE NOTE, all times are Eastern Standard Time. Here are the class times:

8:00 – 8:35
Period 1
8:40 – 9: 15
Period 2
9:20 – 9:55
Period 3
10:00 – 10:25
Assembly (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
Advisor (Tuesday, Thursday)
10:25 – 10:40
Break
10:45 – 11:20
Period 4
11:25 – 12:00
Period 5
12:05 – 12:40
Period 6

Following this schedule will give familiar structure to the day for both students and teachers. By holding classes in the morning, it will address many of the time zone issues we may face for those classes hosted “live” or in real time.

Upcoming communications
Email to students from Mr. Blair: In the coming days, I will be sending a similar note to your son or daughter, so they know what to do in order to be ready for classes April 14 at 8:00 am.

Email to students from teachers: During the week before classes resume, teachers will be contacting their students to make sure they are set up. They will inform their students what material they will be covering in that specific course, how they will be communicating with students and what the daily/weekly expectations will be.

Accountability and expectations
Students will be assessed on the work assigned during the third term, and a measure of their success will be reflected on the Stanstead report card. Final assessments will be determined depending on the course and grade level.

For students in Grades 7-11
: We will wait for an announcement from the Quebec Ministry of Education and follow the instructions and guidelines.

For Grade 12:
I will be sending more information about final assessments, AP exams and report cards in the days to come. Final mark calculation will be: Term 1 = 35%, Term 2 = 35%, December Midterm = 10%, Term 3 = 20%

The goal of this extended academic time is to make sure your child is in the best position possible to be prepared for the subsequent school year. We look forward to many exciting days ahead. If you have time, I invite you to listen in on what your child is learning. You will have a chance to see his or her teachers in action.

On behalf of the academic team, thank you for helping us support your child through this unique time. If you have any questions, please send them to me and I will be happy to answer them.
