SB Soccer: The Season so Far

By Andre Simard
Game 1: SC @ Massey-Vanier Wed. Sep. 11
This was our first game, very early in the new season, with just a few days of tryouts and practice behind us. The game not more than two minutes old when MV scored.

The next two goals of the game belonged to the Spartans through Ryan Young and Greg Malzebin. MV responded in the 21st minute to even the score. Stanstead would take the lead in the 35th minute when Andrew Bouchard finished on a nice cross from Jack Lippmann. It was a see-saw first half with scoring chances 12-8 for SC.

MV jumped to a quick start again in the second half to tie the game at 3-3 in the 6th minute. They followed it up with the winning goal in the 28th minute. Despite an 11-4 scoring chance discrepancy, the Spartans could not score. Many good chances sailed by or over the net. So the final score was 4-3 for them even though we thought it was a game we should have won. A positive note was the play of Grade 9 keeper Patricio Gutierrez who played very well and had no help at all on the Viking goals.
Final Result: L 3-4

Game 2: SC @ BCS Sat. Sep. 14
Three days later we were on the road again to Grant Field in Lennoxville to play BCS. Our rivals showed good skill and went on to a 2-0 lead with two quick goals within two minutes in the middle of the first half. The Spartans’ first (and, alas, only) goal of the game came off the foot of Hadley Forbes after a free kick in close.

The second half was dominated by BCS with many chances and two more goals, while the Spartans struggled with a poor performance overall. The final score was 4-1, which was a fair assessment of how the two teams played. Again, there was high praise for Patricio Gutierrez in net. He kept the game from becoming a more one-sided final score.
Final Result: L 1-4

Game 3: SC vs BCS Wed. Sep. 18
The ETIAC schedule is bizarre this year, with the two games against each opponent (one home/one away) all happening within a few days or, in one case, two days! So our third game of the season was against BCS, the team we had played just four days before. This time, we played at home and hoped the friendly field and fan support would help us put together a solid result. They were the better team today, in terms of the final score. In the first half, they scored 2 goals on 24 chances while the Spartans had 0 with a mere 5 scoring chances. The scoring chance ratio in the second half between the two teams was much closer at 12-7 for BCS. The 3-1 scoring in their favor in the second half allowed them to obtain a convincing 5-1 win. There were a few issues of concern regarding sportsmanship during the contest. Our next potential opportunity to play BCS will depend on how the results of the rest of the league games play out. We may get another chance to play them in either the playoff semi or final later in October…tbc…
Final Result: L 1-5

Game 4: SC vs RR Mon. Sep. 23
Richmond arrived with a team of only 11 total players, but they made the contest a good one, with a couple of solid scoring chances by both teams. The first half ended with SC up only 1-0 despite a 19-7 scoring chances ratio. During the second half, chances were 16-4 and the Spartans notched three more goals. Scoring on the day were Ho Lee, Jorge Corriea, Andrew Bouchard and Hadley Forbes. SC achieved its first league game with a 4-0 result. Kudos to Andrew Bouchard on a good overall game.
Final Result: W 4-0

Game 5: SC @ RR Tue. Oct. 1
Yes, of course our next game was again a few days later against RRHS. It was a rainy and dark day in Richmond with ominous clouds and the threat of thundershowers. The result of this contest was never in jeopardy. The wet stats sheet makes it impossible to establish the scoring chances for both teams, but it is more than fair to say that the Spartans had a clear advantage. With pride, a win and nuggets on the line, all of the Spartans played solid minutes until the second half had to be curtailed by a sighting of lightning. Stanstead scorers were Young (2), Correia (2), Johnson, Malzebin, Bouchard and Gutierrez. Yes, Patricio G. made a few great saves to retain a ‘clean sheet’ as keeper on one side of the scoresheet, and also contributed a goal for SC with a penalty kick goal. All-in-all a great day for our young star keeper. SC improved our overall league W-L record to 2-3.
Final Result: W 8-0

Game 6: SC vs MV Wed. Oct. 2
We hoped that today would be the day to get a positive result against a good MV team, which would even our overall league record. The first half was solid with chances by both teams. It ended with no goals scored. The second half had two flurries of scoring... one at the beginning and the other at the end.

The beginning involved MV stunning us with two quick goals on their only two chances on net in the 7th and 8th minutes of the half. From there on, however, we dominated the play and had several big scoring chances. We just could not score. Only in the 32nd minute of the half (72nd of the 80-minute game) did we finally get our first goal of the day by Ryan Young. Now the team and spectators began to come alive. And there was more to come.

The ‘end’ I referred to involved Ryan Johnson continuing to go after a ball that looked to be going long out of bounds but he persevered and crossed the ball towards the net where the MV keeper bobbled it allowing Ryan Young to knife the tying goal in the 79th minute! We were ecstatic at that point to be getting a tie. But there was more to come.

A couple of goals and nice playing and passes by SC had MV understandably scrambled, and Ryan Young with solo effort deked and sent a strike to get ANOTHER goal (his natural hat-trick) in the 80th minute. Unbelievable! Any spectators who left early would have missed a great come-from-behind victory by the Spartans. It was mainly due to the playmaking of Ryan Young who put the team on his shoulders on this day. With this surprising and late 3-2 win over MV, we are now 3-3 in league play. We meet Galt for two games (yes, of course, within two days next Monday and Tuesday), which will decide the rest of the league standings before playoffs.
Final Result: W 3-2
