VG Hockey Kick Off Season with Tournament Banner

By Bernie Pimm
The 2022-2023 Stanstead College Varsity Girls Hockey Spartans picked right up where they left off in 2022, by winning the prestigious NAHA Labour Day Classic in Wellesley, MA.

In similar fashion to last year’s championship win at the Female Sports School Challenge in Winnipeg, the Spartans ran the table and went 6-0, defeating the PWHL’s Ottawa Lady Sens 2-0 in Sunday’s final.

Sunday, proved to be a definitive day for the girls as they defeated the reigning provincial champion, Fraser Valley Rush, 2-0 off goals by Max Tremblay and Béatrice Perron- Roy, and a tremendous shut-out performance by Gr. 11, Joliane Tremblay.

In the final, the Spartans earned a hard-fought, tight 2-0 win off the stellar 25-save performance by Arianne Leblanc, reminiscent of her 25-save, 5-0 shutout this summer for Team Canada against Team USA. Max Tremblay scored what proved to be the game winner early in the game on a great shot off a turnover, just inside the Lady Sens blue line.

Alice Sauriol, Max Tremblay and Béatrice Perron-Roy led the way offensively for the Spartans, while Elodie Roy, Georgia Steenbakkers, Lydia Walsh and Maria Hatzidakis showed their veteran presence on the blue line all weekend long.

Over six games, the Spartans outscored their opponents a combined 20-4, showing us that this year’s squad can be very stingy defensively. With the return of Emma Kreisz and a healthy roster intact, the 2022-2023 Spartans seem poised to have another successful season.
