It was a total team effort this past Tuesday, as the Red & White played their most mistake-free game of the season in a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Massey-Vanier. Our opponents had improved since that first game of the season (seems so long ago!), but your Spartans have also come a long way, and we showed it with a truly dominating game where contributions came from everywhere.
Highlights? Oh, you say you want HIGHLIGHTS!
In the most expensive play of the game, at least for my wallet, Hailey sent in a gorgeous corner kick that Raf headed into the near corner to open the scoring. For years I’ve had a deal with my teams that any headed goal means donuts for the whole team. Thanks, Raf! Do you know what 2 dozen donuts from Tim Horton’s cost these days?!
Off another corner kick, this time by Raf, Kaitlyn notched her first goal of the year by calmly slotting home a loose ball.
Several players had their best games of the season, all at the same time! 1) Esperanza made an impact at offensive mid, including setting up the game’s fourth goal; 2) Jordyn was athletic and confident and most of all comfortable out on the wing; and 3) Mylee was so dangerous and aggressive every time she touched the ball – those cutback dribbles are DIRTY – that she earns Player Of The Game honours. She even scored a goal with her knee, popping the ball smartly over the goalie, which you don’t see every day. But don’t even think of asking me for donuts for that too, knees don’t count. Cuz I said so!
Hailey froze the keeper and made another penalty shot look easy – she’s so good at PKs now.
You know you’re playing your defensive mid position properly when the ball keeps finding you, and by “you” I mean Flavie, who is reading the game right now at an elite level.
She didn’t have much action thanks to the stingy MJZ back line (Margot-Julia-Zoe), but when the Viking striker rolled a shot towards the left corner, Etsu-NO said “not this time” with an impressive side dive, barely deflecting the ball wide.
We had our first perfectly executed “flick on” courtesy of Olivia, who sent Margot’s throw-in directly to a well-placed Chichi, who one-timed the bouncing ball just wide of the goal.
And finally there is Bella who, exhausted at the end of a long shift (also HER best game of the season), took a deflected ball in the face and proceeded to give the dirtiest look I’ve ever seen to anyone within 10 feet of her. Remind me never to get on Bella’s bad side!
All to say, that was what TEAM soccer looks like. Everybody contributing and doing their part. What a fun game that was to watch. Whose house? OUR HOUSE!
Enjoy your October break, and don’t worry, I won’t forget the donuts!!
