Trust in Your Strengths

By Tammy O., Grade 12
Standing here, with the responsibility of giving the final prefect speech after such powerful speeches before me, is honestly more than a little intimidating. This year’s prefects have set a remarkably high standard, and I have the privilege (and slight pressure) of rising to that moment with a speech that I hope will leave a lasting impression.
One thing I noticed is that many of this year’s speeches focused on the idea of identifying flaws and working to overcome them. However, I’d like to take a slightly different approach; not by dwelling on what I lack, but instead, by recognizing what I do have, and choosing to believe in it, again and again.

The truth is, recognizing your strength isn’t consistent, nor does it come naturally. It’s easy to focus on what you’re not: what you could do better, where you fall short, or how you compare to others. I’ve done it more times than I can count.

But that doesn’t get me anywhere.

What does make an impact, however, is the way in which I uplift myself and focus on what I am good at.
For example, I know that I am a listener. I am thoughtful, and I make a conscious effort to uplift those around me. And while those strengths may not stand out at first, they set the foundation for the type of leader I strive to be.

Another strength I’ve come to embrace is my ability to connect with others. I am naturally outgoing, and I find it easier than most to talk to people, to build new relationships, and to bring energy into a room.
These are the strengths I’ve chosen to trust. They remind me of who I am, steady me in moments of doubt, and shape the leader I continue to become.

To trust your strengths is to lead with purpose and inspire others to do the same. That is the belief I strive to embody, and the one I hope each of you will embrace. Every single one of you is capable of greatness; and it begins with choosing to believe in yourself. Lean on your strengths, and you’ll be amazed at the impact you can make.
