SG Basketball vs Seminaire de Sherbrooke

Memories of last year against Seminaire de Sherbrooke include our important 28-26 win that ended up clinching the league banner for SC, followed by the forfeit in their last league game against us, which rearranged the playoff seedings for all teams with interesting results. Our first game against them this season was not a close contest, but there were many positive traits shown by the Spartan players this evening.

The first quarter saw the Spartans get off to a fine start with 6 points from Clara, 4 from Erika and 2 from Julia. 1Q Score: SC 12 - SdeS 6

Stanstead added 16 points in the second quarter. The driving-machine Julia added 6 more points that period, with slashes to the basket, plus the added free throws she gained from being fouled on many of those attempts. SarahL extended her shooting finesse from practice the day before, chipping in 4 points in the period on two-for-three shooting.  Evanny, Clara and Miranda added 2 points each. The Barons as a team replied with 8. 2Q Score:  SC 28 - SdeS 14

The halftime score allowed us to play many players in the second half with everyone getting minutes and almost all having a shot at net or a point. In the third quarter, Julia led us with 5, SarahL finally got the splash 3-pt shot she had not been able to convert for some time, Clara added 3, Evanny 2, and Elizabeth and Miranda 1. The third-quarter team scoring was a comfortable 15-8 period in our favour. 3Q Score: SC 43 - SdeS 22

The final quarter lacked much scoring punch, as we had interesting groups of players out there together, so we lacked some cohesiveness. We only managed 3 points, with 2 from Erika and 1 from Clara. But that was ok, as we knew the result was never in jeopardy and others got the chance to shine in front of parents and friends on our home court. Final score: SC 46 - SdeS 30

Seven players scored in the contest, led by "Spice" Julia with 13, Clara 12, SarahL 7, Erika 6, Evanny 4, Miranda 3 and Elizabeth 1 - great spreading of our scoring. It should also be noted that "Silk" Erika had a terrific day, leading the group from the point, distributing the ball and making good decisions. In fact, both Coach Davis and I have been noticing and are quite pleased to see that each Spartans player is showing improvement every day. They are becoming thinking players who are gaining understanding of how the game is played. We are proud of and happy for the girls who are showing great effort, attitude and improvement.

Next up for the Spartans will be (after a few days without a basketball during Winter Carnival) a Monday evening tilt against the same Barons at their home turf.
