Athlete of the Week: Henry Riddell

By Erik Van Dyke
It takes courage and confidence to be a soccer goalkeeper, especially when you’ve never played it before, and even MORE especially when you are a Grade 7 playing on a team with Grade 8s, Grade 9s and even Grade 10s.

But that is what’s special about this week’s recipient, Henry Riddell. At opening tryouts for junior boys soccer, a month shy of his 13th birthday, this young man from Barnston West, Que. took on the challenge of the loneliest position in soccer and set his goal to improve every day. And last week, against BCS, all of his hard work paid off as he stopped every shot he faced and helped lead his team to a season-ending shutout victory. It has been said that “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the dog.” Henry would definitely agree, as would his teammates and his coaches. Congratulations on a well-earned Athlete of the Week!

Honourable Mention
Tamara Wood-Downey (Sr Girls Soccer) for her strong midfield play – and sensational goal off the volley! – in last week’s tie vs BCS.
