Hockey Weekend Recap – November 4-7

The varsity boys headed to Minnesota to compete in one exhibition game and the 2021 Upper Midwest HS International Invitational Tournament. Also on the road, the prep girls headed to Port Hope to face Trinity College School for a double-header. The prep boys stayed home to host John Rennie in a pair of games.
 
 
Varsity Boys Hockey
 
The weekend travel started on Wednesday night for the varsity boys. They traveled through the night and Thursday morning to arrive at their destination, Alexandria, Minnesota.
 
Game 1 vs North Christian Academy
 
North Christian Academy is ranked third in the USA U18 behind Shattuck-St. Mary’s and St Louis Blues 18U AAA, according to myhockeyrankings.com.
 
Benoit Forget played an outstanding game stopping all 53 shots against and coming away with the shutout win. This performance also awarded him our school’s Athlete of the Week honours.
 
The goals were scored by Nathan Garnier and Aksel Jalojarvi, with both players assisted on each other’s goals.
 
Game 2 vs Shattuck-St. Mary’s
 
Friday’s game commenced the International Invitational Tournament. The number-one ranked team outshot the Spartans 35-34. In nets for the varsity boys' Wills Seagrave had a save percentage of .800 for the game. The Spartans’ lone goal was scored unassisted by Elijah Young. Shattuck found themselves on top with a 7-1 win.
 
Game 3 vs Michigan Development Hockey League
 
For the second game in the tournament, the varsity boys faced off against Michigan Development Hockey League. Between the pipes, Benoit Forget made 29 saves. Moritz Lackner, Jeremy Leroux, Hayden Pimm and Nathan Garnier all found the back of the net. Unfortunately, four goals were not enough for the Spartans. They lost 5-4 to Michigan Development Hockey League.
 
Game 4 vs Chicago Mission
 
The last game of the weekend and of the tournament was played on Sunday against Chicago Mission. Wills Seagrave and Liam Dee shared the net and faced a combined 40 shots. The sole goal of the game was attributed to Chaka Muntu with assists from his linemates Garnier and Leroux. The Spartans lost to the Chicago Mission 7-1.

Prep Boys Hockey
 
The prep boys were the sole team to play at home this weekend and coming out on top with two wins against John Rennie High School. Ten players recorded at least one point over the weekend, with captain Dominic Pokora scoring 4 goals in the second game.
 
Game 1 vs John Rennie
 
Starting in net for the Spartans was Zev Brown. He faced 20 shots and only let in two for a save percentage of 0.900.
 
Cedric Beauregard opened the weekend with the first goal, assisted by Jules Butler and Jakub Linet.
 
John Rennie answered back seven minutes in the second. However, the tie did not last long as Liam Wilson scored an unassisted goal three minutes later. Ryan Johnson tripped an opposing playing resulting in a penalty. John Rennie took advantage with a goal nine seconds into the penalty.
 
The only action in the third period happened early; John Rennie received a two-minute minor for hit to the head. Zackary Maheu scored the game winner with help from Juho Virtanen and Eli Antoine.
 
Game 2 vs John Rennie
 
The second game included nine different players recording at least one point. Half of Stanstead goals were scored either on the powerplay (1) or the penalty kill (3).
 
John Rennie scored their first under 4 minutes into the game. Roughly six minutes later, Trofim Godochkin received a penalty for slashing. This did not slow down the team, as Marcus Krats found the back of the net with the help of Iain Olsen on the penalty kill.
 
The Spartans were able to capitalize with a power play goal from Pokora. However, 50 seconds later John Rennie answered with a power play goal of their own. The two teams continued back and forth in this high scoring game. Pokora completed his hat trick, one scored on the penalty kill, the other during 5-on-5 play. The period ended 6-4 for the Spartans.
 
Pokora captured his fourth goal of the night with the help of Antoine Remillard and Juho Virtanen. Thomas Nyberg played the full game in nets, stopping 36 of the 41 shots on net. The Spartans won 8-5.

Prep Girls Hockey
 
The girls played two games against Trinity College School in Port Hope on Saturday.
 
Game 1 vs TCS
 
The first puck drop of the day was bright and early at 10:00 am. Starting in net, Joliane Tremblay faced 22 shots in the first shutout of her Stanstead career.
 
After spending roughly half the period in the box, the girls were able to kill the penalties and hold the score at 0-0.
 
The scoring opened in the second period with a goal by Zoe Charland assisted by Rosalie Tremblay and Emma MacIntyre. This would be the lone goal of the game to bring the Spartans to victory.
 
Game 2 vs TCS
 
Only a couple of hours later at 3:00 pm, the prep girls hit the ice for the second game of the day against TCS. Lana Peasley saw her first full game this season, stopping 17 shots.
 
The Spartans were behind for the first time this season. After a two-goal deficit in the second period, Rosalie Bouchard scored the first Spartan goal of the game with the help from Charland. TCS replied just over a minute later with another goal. However, Bouchard answered back and ended the period with her second goal of the game.
 
Jamie Arsenault recorded her first goal as a Spartan to make the score 3-4 with TCS still leading. Unfortunately, the Spartans were unable to bounce back and TCS grabbed the empty net goal to finish the game 3-5.
