It has been 17 years since the name “Stanstead College” has appeared on the Graham Neil Hockey Tournament plaque. But after a few near misses in recent years, the Prep Boys Spartans brought it home this past Sunday in an exciting final against Triolet of Sherbrooke.
In round-robin play, the Spartans went 2-1 to advance to the quarter final, where they defeated Polyvalante Marcel Landry 5-4 in dramatic fashion.
With Stanstead up 2-0 to close the first half (E. Faucher, Seeback), for Marcel-Landry replied with four unanswered goals in the second. A penalty was assessed against Marcel-Landry for hand coverage in the defensive end, resulting in a successful penalty shot from Shane-Alexandre Dubé with 50 seconds left. Then, with only 36 seconds remaining, Dubé came through again on a contested goal that was allowed under review. The Spartans then won on a shootout.
Sunday’s semi-final against Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau ended 4-3 to put Stanstead into the final against the Harfangs from Triolet, whom the Spartans had previously beaten 6-2.
Chaz Faucher opened the scoring in the first half, Triolet responding on a quick powerplay goal. Kieren O’Brien scored the game-winner near the top of the second half, and the Spartans put it away in the dying seconds with an empty netter to win 3-1.
This is the first tournament win for Stanstead since 2009, the last year the varsity boys played in the ETSB league and one of many wins for the College in that era. Stanstead continued to participate in the tournament at the junior and then prep level. Formerly the AAESQ tournament and considered the equivalent of a provincial English high school championship, the tournament now falls under the banner of the Quebec Secondary School Sports Association and is run by Stanstead College as a showcase invitational tournament.
Elliot Faucher was named tournament MVP, while Shane-Alexandre Dubé was named top defender. Chaz Faucher was team all-star.
Prep Girls Win in Quebec
Meanwhile, in Quebec City, the Prep Girls Hockey Spartans captured the U18 AAA title at the Tournoi International Féminin du Québec. In the 21-team event, Stanstead was undefeated, winning 7-0 against Sudbury Lady Wolves, 5-1 over Delta Hockey Academy, 2-0 AS Québec, 8-2 over Fundy Kraken. An 11-0 semi-final win against Étoiles de Laurentides-Lanaudière put the Spartans in the final against the East Ottawa Stars.
The Spartans had beaten East Ottawa Stars earlier in the year7-0, but this matchup was a tighter affair and the only especially close game of their tournament. Elisabeth Bélanger opened the scoring in the first period. Ottawa scored two before Rafaelle Parent tied it up to end the second on a powerplay goal. Jadin Bingham scored the game winner 39 seconds into the third period, again on the powerplay.

At the same tournament, the varsity girls competed in the College (cegep) class, coming away with five wins but losing in the final 5-1 against Limoilou, with the lone goal scored by Zoé Charland.
In earlier play, the Varsity Spartans were 4-0 against Dawson, 4-3 versus Champlain Lennoxville, 6-0 against André Laurendau, 5-2 against Saint-Laurent (1/4 final) and 1-0 against Champlain Lennoxville again in the semi.
