Three Banners in Two Days

Stanstead College teams captured three championship RSEQ banners this week, capping off a dominant season in the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA) league.

With the state of rugby in decline in the Townships, the Stanstead senior leagues moved to GMAA this spring for 15-v-15 competition at the RSEQ Juvenile D3 level.

The senior boys faced Loyola High School in the championship final, taking home the banner with a 33-17 win. Earlier in the season, the boys won the GMAA 7s tournament at Concordia and won the Division A title at Rugbyfest in New Brunswick – the school’s best-ever showing there.

Chaz Faucher was named the championship MVP.

The senior girls, meanwhile, face College Ste-Anne of Dorval in a final at home on Wednesday, winning 33-14. Maélie Laforge was named game MVP.

Yesterday, it was the turn of boys lacrosse, also playing in the GMAA at the RSEQ Juvenile D3 level. At home, the boys faced Collège Brébeuf in a very close and physical final, winning 7-5.

Dylan Orr led the way offensively with 4 goals and 2 assists and was named MVP for his efforts. Zoé Charland scored the game-winning goal, while Jacob Leduc added key goals in the final game of his debut season.

“Our defensive group battled hard in a very tough game,” said coach Simon Winquist. “I’m incredibly proud of this group. They stayed composed in a championship game, trusted each other, and found a way to finish the season as champions.”

Boys lacrosse last won the GMAA championship two years ago.
