SG Soccer: Spartans Bounce Back at Home

By Erik Van Dyke
We’ve had good games before. But nothing quite like this past Wednesday’s home tilt vs Richmond Regional. Because for the first time this season, we let the ball do the work. Instead of exclusively going north-south, we played east-west. Instead of always passing to feet, we passed to space. Instead of grinding our way past defenders, we moved the ball.

In easily the best passing performance of the season, your Spartans controlled the game from start to finish, not allowing our big, strong opponents enough space to take advantage of their imposing size and booming kicks.

Hailey was her maestro self, orchestrating the offense with Pinpoint Precision and Perfect Pace (try saying that 5 times fast!). But what made this game special was EVERYBODY on the field seemed to “get it” at the same time. Passes back to the defence. Square passes for oncoming midfielders. And a steady diet of well-weighted balls up the line for strikers to run onto.

There were a lot of stellar performances. At the back, Julia and Margot both played decisively and with pace, while Zoe was simply fantastic. Poised, smart and strong on the ball, she almost singlehandedly shut down the right side of Richmond’s offence. In fact, the sweetest move of the game was when Zoe, chasing the ball towards her own goal, deked her trailing opponent out of her shoes with a fake call to Julia and then a classic turn-and-burn up the left side.

Mylee had another strong game at striker, playing with more purpose and confidence; Flavie was a ball-winning force in the midfield; Etsuho recorded her first shutout ever in goal(!); and Olivia produced the happiest moment of the season when she scored the first goal of her life and celebrated like an 8-year-old at Christmas. But amid all those amazing performances, the Player Of The Game goes to Kaitlyn W, who played the match of her life out on the wing. Patient, perfectly positioned, and then purposeful when the action reached her side, she had her fingerprints all over this game, especially the first two goals that came as a direct result of her outstanding play.

And I’ve just gotta mention the Quote Of The Game, well, maybe not a quote, but the following is straight from Coach Goodsell’s game notes: “Raf is quietly whispering French swear words after each missed attempt LOL.” (Not all games are going to be great, but you know you’re an elite striker when scoring only two goals makes you mad!)

Ultimately, your Spartans finished with a comprehensive 4-0 win over a solid opponent. Despite that rough loss at BCS, we still hold our fate in our hands for the ultimate goal, the ETIAC league banner. Next up, on the road at Massey. While we are undefeated at home this season, we have not won a road game. Time to change that story!
