The Lesson of Pete Best

By Cecilia R., Grade 11
In 1962, Pete Best was the drummer of a young band called The Beatles. He had played with them during their early years and helped them build a following. However, just before the band achieved worldwide fame, Pete was suddenly replaced by Ringo Starr. The Beatles went on to become one of the most famous bands in history, while Pete Best was left behind.

For many people, losing the chance to be part of such a successful band would feel like the end of their dreams. They might feel disappointed, unlucky, or even believe that they had failed. After all, Pete had been part of the journey, yet he did not get to share in the success that followed.

But what makes Pete Best’s story so inspiring is the way he chose to look at his life.
Best once said, “A lot of people turn around and say that I'm most probably the unluckiest man in show business. And I tend to think that I'm one of the luckiest.”

He went on to explain that, forty years later, he still had a marriage that was holding together, his health, a great band, happiness, and a sense of humour.

Pete Best could have spent his life focusing on what he had lost. Instead, he chose to appreciate what he still had. He demonstrates that we may not always get the life we imagined, but we can still build a life worth being grateful for.

Sometimes we become so focused on one opportunity that we forget there are other ways to find happiness and success. We may not get the job we wanted, make the team we hoped for, or achieve the dream we worked so hard towards.

In the end, Pete Best’s story reminds us that success is not always about getting the opportunity we wanted—it is also about how we respond when that opportunity is taken away and that success is not measured only by fame, money, or recognition. Sometimes, success is having good health, loving relationships, happiness, and the ability to laugh even when life does not go as planned.
