SG Basketball: Signs of Improvement vs La Poudriere

Last week, the Spartans travelled to Drummondville to take on La Poudriere at their school. I heard that the game was against a very tough opponent who pressed and played well, also that at some point it was decided to remove the scores from the scoreboard as their lead went from 20 to 30 to 40 and ultimately to 50+ points. It was a very tough loss for the Spartans with a final score of 11-62.

Tuesday evening was the rematch in the comfy confines of the Mackay Gym. It was hoped that the learning from last weekend would lead to a better result in this second attempt at La Poudriere.

One sad fact, however, was that we would be missing starting point guard Erika for this contest. She is still on medical watch protocol since the bang to her head on Saturday morning in Quebec City. Ever the gamer, Erika took over the stats sheet in support of her team.

The coaches spoke to the necessity of playing solid defence, rebounding, running the floor always looking up and getting back quickly on defence. The Spartans responded in fine form, and the first quarter score indicated that they were, indeed, ready to work hard and focus on the key elements required to be competitive. The SC contributions in the first period came from Julia, Clara and Elizabeth. More importantly, LP was limited to only 8 points. That is what you could call a solid start!  1Q Score: SC 5 - LP 8
The visiting team extended their lead during the second quarter with 7-18 scoring. SC obtained 4 points from Julia and 1 from Clara. The scoresheet may have had an error or two, but the halftime score on the sheet is what must be followed.  2Q Score: SC 12 - LP 26

The third quarter was also reasonable in scoring, with lots of Spartan hard work and learning going on. LP gained 8 and SC 6 on 4 from Clara and 2 from Miranda.  3Q Score: SC 18 - LP 34

In the final quarter SC only managed to score 5 points with 4 by Clara and 1 by Zoey. LP dominated as SC was too loose with defensive coverage, especially in terms of trying to shut down their key players #15 and #8. Those two players alone scored 16 of the 17 LP points in the period. Unfortunately, they also ended the game on an 11-0 run. Had we been able to defend a little better at that point, we could have had them with a total in the 40s, which would have been a better indicator of the successful approach in this game. All in all, the coaches were very happy with the improvement and that all players contributed and learned.  Final score: SC 23 - LP 51

Next up for the Spartans is the annual BCS Tournament in Lennoxville this Friday and Saturday.
